Chapter Seven

The Wraiths Closure

'Hey how're you doing?!'

The young barmaid glanced up at Waltz timidly, looking about her, before turning back to face him.

'Hello' she smiled.

Waltz grinned happily back.

The place they were now was an open bar, the breeze blew gently into the space. It was empty now, and there was no one else about, save for Waltz and the young maid.

Waltz leant further on the table, watching the maid playfully.

'What can I do for you?' the young maid asked him.

'I want to talk to you' Waltz gleamed.

'About what?'

'I want to talk about the wraith.'

The young maid hesitated then, turning and placed the tray she carried on the bar behind her before looking back to him.

'What do you want to know?'

Waltz tilted his head playfully, his pink hair falling about his face.

'I...' he began, 'want to know more about Anya, that was her name wasn't it? The wraith?'

'Yes' the barmaid replied dipping her head. 'We...we knew her.'

'All of you knew her I'm sure' Waltz said. 'This is a small village, everyone knows everyone and all that. I'm sure you all knew Anya very well. What was she like in her life?'

The maid hesitated.

'Go on' Waltz urged. 'What was she like?'

'She was kind' the lady spoke quietly.

'I thought as much, from what I have heard' Waltz said. 'I think it was a terrible thing that happened to her.'

'She abandoned her children.'

'Yes' Waltz nodded, 'so I've heard.'

He considered the maid then, watching her closely.

'Tell me more about her, I want to know everything you know.'

A short distance away, Sumaey watched.

'What is he doing?' she asked, sitting on the bench in the open space with Spirit by her side.

'I don't know' Spirit replied in a grumble, leaning forwards on his elbows. 'I'm sure he's got a plan.'

Sumaey glanced over her shoulder, towards Graham and Loxus now, who continued to play together as they so often did.

'They are like children' Sumaey spoke tenderly. 'I've grown quite fond of them.' She paused then. 'I'm glad Loxus is alright, Waltz too.'

She looked back at Spirit then, who sat there silently.

Sumaey looked ahead again, watching Waltz as he continued to converse with the maid.

Later that day, when Sumaey was elsewhere, cleaning Loxus's metallic body, she saw Waltz again. This time he was talking to an old farmer.

A few hours later, when she had sat down to eat, she saw him again, speaking to someone else.

'What are you doing?' Sumaey asked with irritation a time later, as she dug into her dessert, having finished her main meal.
