Chapter Twenty
Conclusion
'Ah man...that's still sore as heck' Waltz complained loudly.
'I'm sorry' Sumaey answered, applying the burn-healing cream to his skin. 'I'm trying to be as gentle as I can.'
'I hate getting hurt like this' Waltz groaned. 'I feel like a bruised peach.'
'Ok' Sumaey laughed with a frown. 'As you say.'
'When did Spirit say he will be back?'
'Very soon' Sumaey replied. 'He's going to collect the reward now. You know how he hates strangers. You know he will be eager to return to us.'
'Indeed.'
They were staying at another inn now, using the last of their financial reserves.
Sumaey straightened up, giving Waltz a level expression as he sat in the chair.
'Waltz' she spoke seriously. 'I want to ask you something.'
'What is it?' Waltz replied sounding a little nervous. 'And why do you sound so serious?'
'You told the witch that if she did not save me you would die.' Sumaey paused then. 'Would you really have killed yourself?' Sumaey asked him.
Waltz stared at Sumaey in shock for a moment, before letting out a sigh.
'Yes' Waltz answered shortly. 'I.... I already lost my old guild.... before.... before I met you. The pain I felt that day...she did it because I disobeyed her.' He gritted his teeth, brow furrowed. 'I cannot express in words how much I hate her, its pure loathing, it eats away at me inside. I lost my guild because of her, because of me...because I disobeyed her. Those were human lives...and she killed them...over nothing.'
'I'm sorry to bring it up' Sumaey told him. 'I just...wanted to know.'
'It's ok' Waltz sighed, relaxing a little now. 'You can ask.' He shook his head. 'I just...don't want to think about her. Not if I can help it. Not unless I have to. She is pure evil. A trickster. A master of disguise, she takes many forms.'
'You mean she doesn't really look like that?' Sumaey asked. 'What I saw?'
'No' Waltz groaned. 'I don't know what she looks like. Her true form I mean, it could be anything.... if she even has one...maybe she doesn't. Who could say? Maybe even she doesn't know. Witches...they are incredibly powerful...incredibly old.'
Waltz hung his head.
'What are we going to eat tonight? He asked
'You're hungry?'
'I'm just taking my mind off things' Waltz replied. 'And yes, I am a little hungry.'
'Well you can have whatever you want. When Spirit gets back...well the reward will be enough to sustain us for quite some time.'
'Yeah' Waltz mumbled, 'his mind far away. Yeah it will.'
'Are you alright?' Sumaey asked.
'Yeah' Waltz mumbled. 'I guess...I'm just...thinking.'
Sumaey tilted her head at him, regarding him, watching him closely.
She took his arm again carefully, continuing to apply the cream gently. It would sooth the burns and ease the pain.
'It's cold' Waltz said.
Spirit returned a short time later. And he brought with him the reward.
