Chapter Seventeen

Into the Fire

Several weeks passed, and there was still no sign of Waltz. Nothing.

Sumaey had begun to get worried.

'Where is he?' she asked the witch on one day.

The witch only glared at her, before walking away without a word.

Several days after that, the witch returned to the home. She was covered in blood, almost entirely from head to toe. It was like she had been in some sort of ritual, or a slaughter.

Sumaey stood in the doorway watching as the witch gasped, straightening and walking forwards.

Sumaey watched her go silently as she headed upstairs, probably to wash.

Sumaey dipped her head, expression dampened. She was overcome with worry.

'Come on Waltz. What are you doing? Come back to me already.'

Several more days passed before Sumaey spoke to the witch again.

'I'm hungry.'

The witch groaned in irritation. She stood in the kitchen of the home with her hands pressed against the table, giving Sumaey a flat expression, her lip curled up slightly in what appeared to be disgust.

'I'm busy' she told Sumaey shortly. She appeared to be doing some kind of experiment. There was a glass beaker in front of her filled with a dark-purple liquid, and an open book beside that.

'I'm bored' Sumaey added. 'Where is Waltz?'

'Gods not him again' the witch sighed. 'I'll bring him back if that will shut you up.'

'You'll bring him back?' Sumaey questioned. 'You mean.... you've been able to do that all this time?'

'Yeah?' the witch snapped. 'So? And before you give me grief about it, Waltz has the means to return on his own whenever he wants but he's choosing not to. Why do you think that is?'

'Uh...'

'You know what? I'm tired of this anyway. I'll bring him back if that will stop your sulking.'

The witch clicked her fingers then, and Waltz suddenly appeared into the room out of thin air.

For a moment he looked confused as he glanced about him, before his sights fell on Sumaey.

'Oh' he said.

'.... Waltz....' Sumaey breathed.

Waltz stared at her in shock for a moment, before storming out of the room away from her.

'Waltz wait!' Sumaey called out, hurrying after him.

'Ugh' the witch groaned once she was alone again. 'What a pain.'

Once they were outside, Sumaey grabbed Waltz by the shoulder, spinning him around.

'Waltz what happened? What's wrong?'

'I'm sorry' Waltz gasped. 'I've done horrible things...'

Sumaey stared at him hard, he appeared to be short of breath, almost as if he were a little in shock.

'I....' Waltz mumbled, finding his voice. 'I um.... the witch has been caring for you has she?'

Sumaey's expression saddened then.
