Chapter Twelve
A Pretty Trail through the Air
They travelled a great distance, returning to the area they had been before, one of the places that had been attacked by the great fiery beast. The beast had destroyed many homes, and targeted many places over a wide area, with its nest in the heart of it all. Now there was no sign of it, not here anyway. Not now.
Waltz turned and walked out of the inn they had stopped at, he had headed over to the notice board to see what was there, and the quest for killing the great beast was still going, but there was no page advertising for the job.
'They're saying a man keeps coming in and taking the ad down' Waltz explained to Sumaey as they made their way back through the crowded streets.
It was just the two of them. They found a stable and kept Graham and Loxus there. Spirit and the nameless cat had not entered the town, Spirit as usual had chosen to stay away from other people. So often when they approached a town or village, Spirit would slink away.
'A man hu?' Sumaey said, frowning. 'You think that it's him?'
'Yeah' Waltz sighed. 'Lyle. I'm sure we will run into him again soon.'
'I wonder what link he has to all of this' Sumaey spoke aloud.
Waltz glanced towards her then as they continued walking, before looking ahead again.
'He is....' he began, trailing off then.
'What?' Sumaey prompted.
'The pyromancer was married' he began. 'Then.... something happened, and she went missing, the details are unimportant but certain people speculate that she was killed by the pyromancer. Her son is Lyle, but the pyromancer is not Lyle's father.'
'Could that have something to do with her disappearance?' Sumaey asked.
'Who could say?' Waltz shrugged. 'It may well have something to do with it. The pyromancer knows though Lyle is not his, but he tolerates him anyway, well just about.... apparently.'
'And this creature?' Sumaey prompted. 'It is human....'
'It's his daughter' Waltz finished. 'The pyromancer's daughter.... turned into that....'
'Horrible...' Sumaey mumbled.
'There is one thing I still want' Waltz said lifting a sheet in his hand, one of the ads he had taken from the billboard back at the inn.
'What?' Sumaey's expression darkened at that.
'That's right' Waltz gleamed excitedly at her. 'It's him.'
'The chimera......wait this ad says he killed a man' Sumaey said taking the page from him and analysing it.
'Yeah' Waltz straightened up. 'It's a tragic thing. This is the first time he has hurt someone...or so it seems.'
'I wonder what changed' Sumaey sighed.
'We're going to find out. I've taken the job.'
'Do we have time for that?' Sumaey asked glancing up at him.
'The meeting with the pyromancer will be in a few weeks from now' Waltz said narrowing his eyes as he stared over her shoulder at nothing in particular. 'We have time' he said. 'I have an idea to catch this chimera. Also' he added meeting Sumaey's eyes at last, his expression warming now as he focused on her, 'we need to continue practicing your dancing.'
'Oh that' Sumaey glowered. 'I will never be any good at that.'
'You don't have to be good' Waltz said taking the paper back from her and folding it away, 'you just need to be passable.'
