Chapter Sixteen
Missing
The witch returned to the place she had first summoned Waltz and Sumaey. It was a small home, built in the side of a rocky slope, just a short distance away from a dingy town.
This building was secluded, and it was empty, save for the witch and Sumaey now.
There were two stories in the building, and Sumaey was upstairs at this time, resting peacefully on the bed.
The witch entered the home, closing the door quietly behind her and casting her eyes about the room. She raised her head, looking towards the stairs.
She stepped forwards, ascending, taking the steps carefully one at a time, the hem of her mottled dress trailing after her.
She entered one of the rooms upstairs, turning to the side to see Sumaey lying on the bed.
Sumaey had heard the witch coming, she sat up in the bed now, staring at her with wide eyes.
The witch stared Sumaey silently for a time before speaking.
'Waltz will be gone for a while.'
'What have you done?'
'He's doing a job for me' the witch answered shortly. 'I don't know when he will be back. That depends on him.'
Sumaey said nothing, and the witch stepped into the room further.
'You are fascinating aren't you.'
'What?' Sumaey gasped.
'Do you know what you are?'
Sumaey stared back at the witch, lost for words.
'As far as I come to understand, you fell from the sky.'
'How do you know?' Sumaey uttered.
'I have been watching your little guild for quite some time' the witch told her stepping closer still.
Sumaey shrunk away from her on the bed, hugging her knees to her chest.
'Waltz always was a little odd' the witch said to her. 'He always did things differently...and I am very keen to meet this strange little guild of his.'
Sumaey's eyes widened nervously at that.
'Yes, I know of them' the witch said. 'I have seen them a few times, though only at a distance, and what a strange collection of beings they are.' The witch smiled cruelly. 'I know them all, the blue-skinned water elemental, the mechanical spider, the stag, the cat...' she paused. 'They must be wondering where you two have gotten to, I can bring them here if you like.'
'You keep away from them' Sumaey hissed.
'Oh?' the witch bowed her head to her then, smiling with amusement now. 'So, you do have some fire in you after all.'
The witch sat on the edge of the bed, leaning back on her hand as she surveyed Sumaey.
Sumaey's guard was raised, and she was very caution around the witch.
'You fell from the sky didn't you.'
Sumaey said nothing, glowering at the witch coldly.
'You should be thanking me' the witch smirked turning away then. 'I saved your life.' Her eyes flickered back towards Sumaey for a brief moment. 'But I could kill you all too easily. I have power over you, I could fight and defeat you easily. Without even lifting a finger.'
'You think it's a good thing you did to save me?' Sumaey questioned. 'You killed Waltz's old guild. His entire guild...because he disobeyed you. You're a monster.'
The witch began to laugh then, a gentle chuckle.
'That's right' she smiled. 'I am. I have never been kind, not even as a child.'
The witch turned back to face Sumaey, grinning widely.
'Where is Waltz?' Sumaey asked stubbornly.
'He's not here' the witch replied shortly.
'Where is he?'
'I know what he is by the way' the witch spoke. 'I'm wondering if you do. He is actually a hybrid. His father is a fairy, a beautiful fairy with dragonfly wings. And he has royal blood in him, he is in line to the throne. He doesn't even belong to this world, but to the fairy kingdom, which can only be reached by magic.'
'I want to leave' Sumaey said barely listening to her words.
'You can if you like' the witch spoke rising to her feet now. 'If I wanted to hurt you I could, all to easily. If you wanted to hide, then I will find you. You may as well stay here where it is safe. Waltz will return in time, and if you wander off, they how will he find you?'
Sumaey said nothing, but clenched her teeth silently.
'All of you will be here soon' the witch said turning to walk away, 'I am keen to meet the others properly. In the meantime, stay here. There is a bathroom across the hall. You can wash the blood from you and get into your regular clothes again.'
Sumaey stared down at herself where she had been stabbed, the blood, her blood, was dried and crusted and uncomfortable, the dress she wore now was ruined.
The witch paused at the door, glancing back. 'Such fascinating beings Waltz has found for his new guild' she spoke, before walking through the door and heading back downstairs.
Sumaey heard her leave the house, before all fell silent.
She grasped at the bedsheets beneath her nervously.
'Waltz...' she whimpered. 'Where are you......?'
