Chapter Fifteen

A Turn of Events

Today was the day. Today was the day that Waltz and Sumaey were to meet the pyromancer.

'My wife' Waltz said to Sumaey, holding his arm out for her to take.

Sumaey turned towards him, taking his arm gently.

Waltz faced ahead again, and together, posing as husband and wife, they moved forwards through the entrance doors of the grand building, entering the vast hall within.

Everything was grand, everything was beautiful.

There were very wide stairs curving upwards towards the level above, balconies where guests overlooked the hall below where people danced.

The interior was ostentation, the materials used to build the hall were lavish, and thick curtains hung around the edges of the room.

There were many guests within this place, gentle and pleasant music played over the murmur of voices as the guests spoke to each other. The food that was available, was laid out on massive tables on one side of the room close to the doors.

'Oh excellent' Waltz gleamed as he looked at these things.

The plates were piled high with an assortment of expensive and exotic foods, beautifully crafted pieces of cake that was small enough to each in one bite, savoury quiches and shrimp dipped in succulent sauces, and assortments of rare and delicious fruits...

'It all looks so good' Waltz spoke quietly to his pretend wife. 'Do you mind if I partake?' he asked Sumaey.

'Go ahead' she sighed.

Waltz let go of her and approached the table, reaching for one of the plates.

Sumaey watched him with surprise. He looked so at home in this environment. Though it was so strange for her to see him dressed as he was, in an eastern style, his pink hair hidden away by a neatly folded turban.

Sumaey wore a blue dress, a very expensive piece, that matched the environment and the expensive clothes the other guests around them wore. But wearing it, she felt so out of her skin.

She stared at her reflection in the great mirror upon the wall, thinking about how much she missed her old clothes.

Her dress was blue, and modest in design.

Sumaey stared at herself as Waltz ate slowly.

'If you eat you might feel a little more relaxed.'

Sumaey tilted her head back towards the balcony above them.

'Is that him?' she spoke.

Waltz glanced around, seeing a figure above them dressed in fine emerald clothes. He was a mature figure, imposing. He had a very strong presence within the room.

Waltz turned back to Sumaey then with a serious expression.

'Yeah it is.'

'Great' Sumaey grumbled.

'We are not supposed to meet him for a few hours' Waltz told Sumaey. 'We should enjoy the party, mingle a little...look like we belong here.'

'He doesn't know what we look like' Sumaey said to Waltz. 'I mean...what the merchant looks like...or his wife.'

'That's right' Waltz replied, keeping his voice low as Sumaey had been doing. 'We are safe as long as we play the game right.'

He took Sumaey by the hand gently then, leaning forwards and kissing her on the lips gently, but only briefly.
