'So what are we doing here?' Sumaey asked Waltz.

'There is something I have to do' Waltz spoke reluctantly, 'there is something.... I have to do.'

Sumaey looked away again, towards the little village before them, they stood now in a wheat field.

'What is this place?'

'You've not been here before' Waltz replied. 'I have though, and it wasn't pleasant.'

'The witch brought you here didn't she?' Sumaey asked him.

'I've done horrible things...evil things because of her.' He swallowed the lump in his throat. 'Sometimes I think that it would be better if I were to die.'

'Don't say that.'

Waltz glanced behind him, seeing the rest of his guild some distance away at the edge of the field, standing in the line of the trees.

'I can't fix the wrong I have done' Waltz said, 'but I would like to try.'

He brought out the bag of coins they had earned as a reward for their completing the quest, the one with the fire bird.

'What are you going to with that?' Sumaey asked.

'I'm going to give it away' Waltz replied.

'Give it away?'

'I've killed people' Waltz spoke in a distant voice. 'Children...families. I.... I know it's not close to good enough but...I want to do something.'

Waltz found the man, who turned on to him with hate.

'How could you show your face here again?' the man asked him through his tears. 'Haven't you done enough damage? You've ruined my life!'

'I was acting under orders' Waltz spoke levelly. 'There was nothing I could do. I had to obey.'

'You made the wrong person angry' Sumaey spoke up from behind Waltz. 'That is all.'

The man, father to murdered children, and a husband to a murdered wife, turned his eyes onto Sumaey then, staring at her for a moment, before looking back at Waltz.

'I can't undo the damage I have done' Waltz said to him, 'but I want to give you this.'

Waltz parted with almost all the money they had earned that day, keeping only a little back for themselves, enough to care for his guild and feed them, if not for a few days.

The days were getting cold, and winter was on its way. He wanted to make sure his guild, his family, were well cared for.

'Hey' Spirit spoke up as they walked away from the little village, 'you should not dwell on what you cannot change.'

Waltz glanced back at the water elemental with surprise then, not expecting words of comfort to come from him.

'Right' Waltz laughed awkwardly. 'Yeah, you're right, of course you're right.'

He reached out to Spirit and Sumaey either side of him, pulling them both in for a hug.

This time Spirit didn't flinch.

'If I were able I would hug you guys with my legs I would' he said to Graham, Loxus and the cat who turned to stop before him. 'But I can't.'

Waltz began to laugh then, he was happy.
