Beep Beep Beep

I shifted in my uncomfortable position in the chair. I look at my phone and see that I fell asleep for two hours, it was 3am. I look up and see Jas leaning against the wall, her eyes heavy. She was falling asleep. I let myself fall asleep and she barely slept these past two days. I instantly stood up without another second and went over to her.

"Jas, baby, sit down so you can sleep." I grab her arm.

"No no babe you sleep, I can't sleep like this." She replied firmly, still clearly falling asleep.

She lazily pushed herself off the wall. Her body was limp and weak enough to drag her to the chair, she did not protest. I sat her down in the chair and saw a small stool near the washroom. I brought it over so she could put her feet up.

"Thanks babygirl." She replied almost inaudibly.

I walked out to see if I could ask a nearby nurse for a blanket. One person was able to find me one so I thanked her and brought it over to Jas right away. She was already fast asleep with her bare arms crossed over her chest. She had only a long sleeve on and ripped jeans I could tell she was cold with the typical cool ambience of a hospital room. I covered her in the blanket and kissed her forehead, lingering as I watched her angelic face peacefully asleep. I settled on the window ledge next to where Jas slept, facing Jonathan. I saw him shuffle uncomfortably in his bed, then his eyes slowly peeled open. He saw me and his hand lifted weakly to say hi. I smiled and waved back before he fell back asleep. Something about that short moment we just shared broke my heart, for Jonathan and his family.

Sitting on the ledge, leaning my side against the window sill, I found myself drift in and out of sleep throughout the night.

I woke up slowly seeing the bright fluorescent lights. All cramped up, I sat up straight and stretched, cracking everything in maybe ten different places. I notice Jasmine isn't in her seat, I look at my phone and see that it's almost 2pm. I don't even know how managed to stay asleep for that long. Then I realized my shift starts in an hour.

"Shit" I whispered under my breath.

"Good morning to you too sunshine." I heard the husky voice of a man say.

I look up and see a weak Jonathan smiling smugly, just like his daughter does.

"Sorry, good morning." I laughed before continuing, "how are you feeling?"

"Well, I feel like my lungs are shrivelling up, like a ran a damn marathon and the garbage food they are feeding me is enough to kill me before anything else does." He laughed. Though there was sadness in his voice, I could hear it no matter how much he concealed it.

We sat in comfortable silence until Jonathan broke it.

"So...might be cancer, huh?" He asked with big sigh.

I bit my lip nervously and nodded, unable to meet his eyes at the thought of it.

Just then Jasmine walks in, with a paper bag of food and an iced coffee.

"Morning sleepyhead, I bought you coffee and food since I assumed you'd be starving." She laughed.

I smiled at the sound of her cheerfulness, the sleep did her well, and I think seeing Jonathan in a somewhat better state helps.

"Thanks babe." I said taking the coffee, she pecked my lips sweetly.

"I have to be at work in an hour so I'm gonna have to eat fast." I continued.

"Oh shit, I'll take you."

"No, stay with your dad I can get to work from here, I have my work clothes with me from yesterday and stuff to freshen up." I assured her.
