Eric's pov
I opened the door and all the lights were off except the lap by the bed. I couldn't help but just look at her so peaceful I took a step and bumped something and she opened her eyes and they were a striking blue. She had a small smile on her face and said
" hey I tried to stay up "
Her voice with light traces of sleep in it
" it's ok "
I walked over and sat down and she looked at me and I wasn't doing good at hiding my emotions
" what's wrong "
" well Four said that they've made the decision that you won't be on fence so they'll put you out on patrol "
" mhm "
She said and I could tell she was fighting sleep
" so you'll have to work with Tess and I know you two don't get along anymore "
" yeah "
I could tell she wasn't listening. I looked at her and she was out again I moved a stray strand on hair from her face and got ready for bed. I couldn't get what For said out of my head
" her being with you living with you puts a massive target on her and you know that and yet you won't accept it and do something about it "
" you don't get it "
" I don't get it when someone tried to push her off the fence just because they didn't like the idea of you two and that people use you as fuel to get her to fight because there trying to get her kicked out "
After he told me that we went and talked to the right people to get her job switched and said that we didn't know what would be a better fit for her. This wasn't the first time something like this would happen where they see where people fit best and move them around. I was careful not to wake her up when I got in bed.

Carters pov
I woke up and Eric was just waking up too
" did you say something about a different job last night "
" oh yeah there going to see if you're better on the fence or patrol so today you're going to patrol "
" fine "
" it's the same gear so "
I got dressed and as I was walking to the door he grabbed me by the waist and kissed me
" oh good morning "
" be safe ok "
" I will "
I was confused because I could see the worry on his face. Once I walked into the room the other patrols were I saw why he was worried Tess was there. She kept eyeing me the whole time the woman was giving instructions
" ok now let's go "
That day I purposely stayed away from Tess and didn't do my best because I couldn't get away from her at least on the wall I could find ways around people. We got back to the compound and it was dark out and we were putting our guns away when the woman said
" Carter can I talk to you "
I finished securing the gun I had and I walked with her to a privet room
" So how was today "
" good but I feel like I'm better suited for the wall "
" wrong "
She went to a chair and sat down and said
" you held back today and I saw it you are suited for both positions ... now I wish we could have you do both things but I'm afraid that's not possible ... you will be on the wall and if one of our top men or women can't do their duty that day you will cover "
" ok "
" now go eat "
I left the room and I wasn't hungry so I went to our room. When I opened the door Eric was just coming out of the bathroom
" hey I was just coming to find you "
" you were worried because you knew Tess was in patrol and you know what happened on the wall but you don't know that I'm on the wall and a stand-in if someone can't do their job that day "
He was speechless and I said
" I'm going to bed I'm not hungry "
I got changed and got in bed
" I'll be back in a little bit ok "
He left and I fell asleep.
