"GRADE IS JUST A NUMBER."-

We all looked at our teacher as he speak. All those students who were complaining about their grades was silenced. Even the 'pabida' in our class can't rebutt with what our teacher have said.

"Pagbutihin niyo nalang sa next grading. Di naman kayo maaano ng grades niyo." -

"Is it? Seriously?" -

All eyes went up to the student who just spoken up and were flabbergasted when it came from him- our classmate who usually don't talk.

He all looked to us, then at our teacher before continuing.

"NO. IT'S NOT, SIR. If for you, our grades are just numbers, for us it's not. Sad to say, but these grades you're giving to us? Yan yung magiging basis ng society how to treat us. Either we will be branded with honor or to be embarrassed in class and society. So, don't be shocked and irritated to hear us complaining. You made us this competitive, grade-conscious, and all messed up with what might the society will think of us. Funny thing, with some teachers, grades ain't fair. You're closest to the teacher, you get high grades. You pissed off the teacher, you get low grades. What kind of grading system is that? If we look more clearly, going to school isn't learning or to be educated anymore. It's more about competing with each other, being the top or the loser. The highest or the lowest. Your grades. Your rank. And as the student, we are overpressured by those. So sir, our grade isn't just a number. It isn't."-

We're stunned by what he said. But deep inside, I felt all of his words. Yeah, grades are the society's standard for high and low, genius and dumb.

Those grades describe us.

Yes.

And that breaks my heart the most.
