It was cold. So damn cold. It felt as if all the bones in my body were shivering in the late-night storm, I slowly lifted my shaky hand up to the door and gave a small knock. It was a weak knock, a quiet one. But within seconds the door opened to show my mother, her eyes red and swollen from crying.
"Honey! You are alive!" My mother screams out in joy. Tears stream from her face again. I slowly lifted my ice-cold hands around her also, and her warmth seeped into me.
James sprints to the door and gives me the biggest hug in the world with grandpa not far behind. I open my mouth and let out a shuddering cry, as I looked at their emotional but happy-looking faces.
The tears streamed down my face, and I could taste the saltiness of the tears as they hit my lips. My family latched onto me and pulled me close, refusing to let go until the chattering of my teeth was at its peak.
Later that night I laid in my bed. My room was small with wooden flooring. The walls still painted pink from when I was little. I curl up in my light green bed sheets and think everything over. "No one would believe me," I thought to myself. "They would think I was crazy, they would judge me." I sigh and start to feel the heaviness of sleep wash over me. The refreshing summer breeze flows through my cracked open window and for a moment I forgot all my worries.
A soft growl comes from the far corner of my small room. I become alert, nervous to find out what made that noise. I sat up and glanced around my darkroom.
"Hello?" Startled I grab onto my pillow tightly, now wide awake.
The growling was louder now and I am certain this isn't just my imagination. I could make out a shadowed figure in the corner of my room. I then notice the tail of the creature, it wags so ferociously the thing knocks down my sock bin.
Then silence... I could feel the adrenaline pumping.
"Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark!" I sigh in relief, It was just Sasha. She probably just saw a raccoon out the window.
"Sasha? Is that you Sasha girl?" Slightly less scared I get the courage to move and turn on the bed sidelight. Happy to hear from my pup. Somehow I had not seen her since I returned from-. I gulped and let the thought fade.
Light fills the room and as my eyes adjust I can finally see my little best friend Sasha. Except she is foaming at the mouth... stalking in the shadows.
"What's wrong g-girl?" I feel chills crawl up my back.
She erupts into growls and barks, her jaws snapping towards me. Sasha crawls over, her body hunched over and low to the ground. Each step she took appeared more and more anger-driven.
Maybe Sasha isn't my best friend anymore...
As if on cue Sasha pounces onto my bed, and with the force that I never knew a small dog could have, bites my leg. Her sharp teeth digging deep into my flesh, blood gushes from the wound. I hear a blood-curdling scream but from a voice, I don't recognize. But I knew it was my own. It felt like I wasn't in my body, the shock and pain sent me whirling.
The door pulled open and my grandpa and James stood there. Shock registered in their faces, but James was the first one to move. He ran towards me and yanked Sasha hard off me, more blood flowed out now. I closed my eyes and looked away from the gory mess. I heard James start yanking Sasha outside and my grandpa quickly follows, the last glance I had was my grandfather's sad eyes as he grabbed for his rifle. The dog thrashed and growled in James's arms, but he held tight.
My mother rushed into the room and placed a towel over the bite, her eyes flaring with panic at the blood. The blood seemed to drain from her face as she looked at it. Things were starting to get fuzzy now, and I wasn't sure if it was the pain or shock that caused it.
A gunshot goes off outside.
