We sat on the worn couch with Kodhe's laptop displayed on the small coffee table, Kodhe had dressed a little nicer today. I had done the same, wearing a nice sundress and a little more makeup than usual. After all, I was meeting his parents for the first time today, even if it was just over FaceTime.
"Okay just a tiny warning before I call them, my mom is one of those." He tilted his head looking for the right words. "She's a bit of the protective, only the best for my beautiful son type."
"My mom was pretty protective too, and bordering a little on the crazy side", I started with a small shrug of the shoulders. Kodhe eyed me, and I realized I had said 'was'. I blinked, "not that she is dead or anything!"
"Our moms would get along just fine, I can tell," he gave me a goofy smile. A grin spread over my face in return.
Kodhe started to click a few buttons and two people popped up on the screen. The woman had short brown hair and was giving an over-exaggerated smile, showing off her dimples. The man, on the other hand, had dirty blond hair and brown eyes and seemed a little more laid back.
"Hey, mom, hey dad!" Kodhe waved at them, and I noticed from his tone change that he was nervous. His mother took in us two and her eyes widened at me.
"Is that a girl! Kodhe Andrew La Vinski why did you not tell me you would bring a girl with you!" His mother leaned towards the screen, "I would have dressed nicer!"
I ducked my head embarrassed and felt Kodhe chuckle beside me. "Mom, it's fine. This is Dea, I mentioned her to you a few times." Kodhe nudged me with his shoulder and I did a small wave. Smiling shyly at his parents.
"I thought she was a friend... not a-" his mother cut off when his father straightened.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Dea," Mr. La Vinski interrupted giving me a warm smile. Kodhe relaxed a bit next to me.
"It's nice to meet you too Mr. La Vinski," I said with a smile, I wanted to make a good impression on his parents. So did Kodhe most likely.
"Please call me Charlie, and this is my wife Lizzie."
"Now don't mind me but you are one beautiful girl Dea, I don't know how you ended up with our son!" Kodhe's mom interrupts jokingly.
"Oh! Thank you so much!" I laugh lightly and smile back at her, not sure whether I should return the compliment or if that would come off weird.
"So, how did you two meet?" Charlie asked, getting right into the loaded questions. I glanced over at Kodhe and we both burst out laughing. The parents eyed us warily but they smiled anyways.
"I... well we met at a party," I stated simply, not wanting to get into details. Kodhe nodded, and his parents seemed pleased with the answer. Innocent enough, right?
"Yeah, and before she left with her friend I ran up and got her number," Kodhe added in. His father gave a firm nod, clearly proud of his boy.
"So Dea I presume you go to the same college as Kodhe, correct?" His mother chimed in. I froze, I never went to college and sure wasn't planning too either. How would I even apply, when technically I was legally dead.
Before I could even open my mouth Nene and Sab burst into the house in a fit of giggles. It distracted everyone, and I turned to look at them. Sab quieted down quickly after noticing Kodhe and I were FaceTiming someone. Polite as ever, but Nene, on the other hand, looked threatening. She eyed Kodhe warily and sent a sharp and accusatory glare at me.
I cleared my throat and turned back to the screen. "Sorry, that's my friend and roommate." I sent an apologetic glance over at them, I didn't really warn them that I would have someone over and be FaceTiming people.
Sab ushered Nene upstairs, out of sight, sending another wary glance at the strangers in her home.
"Oh no worries," Charlie waved his hand in the air. In the background, I heard a dog barking and immediately Kodhe perked up.
"Is that Gracie?" He sat up straighter now, searching his parent's background. His father stood up and went to grab something, he returned with a small Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The small dog squirmed in his hands, it's ears flopping around.
"Gracie, hey Gracie," Kodhe spoke aloud, in a high-pitched voice. The dog seemed to tilt its head at the screen, confused about where her name was coming from.
"She misses you Kodhe, she randomly goes and sits on your bed." Liz ruffled the dog's fur, and it leaned into her touch. Then with a quick motion, it jumped from Charles's hands and disappeared off the screen.
The rest of the video chat went smoothly and Kodhe and I leaned against the couch exasperated from the stress of all the questions.
"It's really hard to sugarcoat some things," I laughed quietly. Kodhe looked over at me and he gave me the usual goofy smile. He started leaning in and I could feel the heat radiating off of him. Before we could meet lips Nene came storming down the stairs, Kodhe and I sprang apart quickly. Nothing made it past Nene though, and her eyes slit.
"I'll get going, call me later babe." Kodhe gave me a quick hug and rushed out the door. I waved goodbye to him. Once he shut the door I turned around and raised my eyebrows at Nene.
"Could you not scare him off?" I asked irked. Nene simply ignored my question and snapped at me.
"We need to have a chat... now."
