***Posting a little late, kind of forgot what day we were. It's been hard to keep track, but I hope you're all managing to keep busy so as to not go stir crazy. I still have some school left somehow, online classes are difficult though. But I'm almost done so I should have more time to write after that. For now though enjoy the chapter, and I'll see you guys next week ;)***
Sometimes the school years just feels like you blink and what felt like an hour was really only a minute, and then there's times where what feels like a day passes but it's actually been a month. The past month felt like it passed way quicker than it should. The only day's I really remember are the unnecessarily eventful ones. The day's that remain relatively normal seem to blur together. I did get my uniform though finally, so I don't stick out so much anymore. I think the interest in the new kid has finally died down a little.
I haven't seen much of Lex since I ran into him in the hall those few weeks ago. Just a few brief interactions here and there. I have also been avoiding doing what my uncle had asked me to do. Also somehow Elis convinced me to bring my camera to school, so I have that next to my bag right now. Apparently there's an event of some kind going on she wants me to take pictures of. I think it's some kind of fall festival the school paper is going to be covering,
I got up early since I didn't go out last night. I had some assignments to do so I got those out of the way this morning too. Sometimes I find just sitting at my desk and putting my headphones on with some random music without lyrics helps me to power though it. I was making eggs and the smell and sound of sizzling butter wafted into the air. I had already thrown some bread in the toaster, one of my earbuds still in.
I hadn't heard my uncles door open but I did see him in my peripheral vision hobble out of his room. He yawned and stretched, reaching into his shirt and scratching his side as he walked over. He came up next to me and stared at the eggs I was making.
"You're up early." His voice was groggy and his eyes still looked like they weren't quite open yet.
"Yeah, been up since four. Got a couple assignments done." He looked back up at me and blinked a bit.
"You didn't go out?" I guess I shouldn't be that surprised that he figured out when I usually go on my excursions at night.
"No..." I was waiting for what he was going to follow up his comment with. He walked over to the coffee machine and popped open the top, placing a filter inside.
"I know you still haven't told your dad, it's been double the time limit I gave you." Yeah, there it is.
"...yeah... sorry, it's just..." I poked at the eggs absentmindedly with the spatula. I found myself wanting to ask something that I knew maybe I shouldn't, but at the same time, I wanted to know. "Why does it matter?" My uncle turned to face me, putting down the open jar of coffee on the counter behind him.
"What do you mean?" He crossed his arms over his chest and I glanced over to him before looking back at the eggs I was poking at.
"I just mean, why can't I just do this. Like... I don't have a lot of other things I like to do, and it makes me happy. Plus I get to help others in a tangible way. I'm never going to be a therapist because I'm shit with words but snatching back someone's purse, I know I can do that." I had never said these things out loud before. I found my eyes completely fixated on the eggs, not even realizing I was half holding my breath for what uncle Mike was going to say. I heard a deep sigh. I saw in my peripheral vision that he had his head back, leaning against one of the cabinets as he stared up at the ceiling.
"I," He started, his eyes catching mine as he looked forward again. "I understand what you're saying. I guess your dad is just worried about you getting hurt, or someone finding out about your abilities. A lot of people wouldn't have your best interests at heart if they found out."
