Kara was sixteen years old and lived on the Isle of the Lost with Mal, Evie, Jay, Carlos, and their infamous parents. They hadn't always been friends; in fact, it was only about eight years ago that they first met.
It all began one day at the market. Kara stood by a bakery stall, her eyes locked on the bread. She waited patiently for the right moment, when the baker would be too distracted by a small crowd to notice her. When the time came, she quickly snatched a loaf of bread, tucked it under her jacket, and walked away, thinking she had gone unnoticed. But she wasn't as invisible as she thought. A boy, around her age, had been watching her the entire time. He followed her to a secluded alley where she finally pulled out the bread and began to eat.
"Hey," came a voice from behind her. Kara turned to see the boy standing there.
"Hey," she replied with a smile, her mouth full of bread.
"I'm Jay," he introduced himself.
"I'm Kara," she responded, before offering, "Want some bread?"
Jay nodded, and Kara tore off a piece, handing it to him. They started talking, although the details of their conversation would soon be forgotten. What mattered was that they finished the bread together and bonded in those few stolen moments.
After about half an hour, voices echoed outside the alley, calling out Jay's name. Three children—two girls and one boy—rounded the corner and spotted Jay. The boy had dark brown hair, one of the girls had black hair, and the other was blonde. "Jay, where have you been? We've been looking for you for the past half hour," the black-haired girl said, her tone half-scolding, half-relieved.
"Oh," Jay replied casually.
"We're going home," the blonde girl announced.
"Okay," Jay agreed. He stood up, and then turned back to Kara. "I hope I'll see you again sometime."
"Same," Kara said, smiling.
And they did see each other again, many times. Over time, Mal, Evie, and Carlos joined them, and the group became inseparable. Kara started spending more time at their homes, getting to know Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar, and Cruella. About a year after meeting Jay, Kara moved in with them, and their home became hers too. Together, they created countless memories. When they were fourteen, they went to the hairdresser, where Mal, Evie, and Carlos dyed their hair. They also made a name for themselves on the Isle of the Lost, having several run-ins with Uma and her crew, though they always managed to handle whatever came their way.
But Kara had her secrets—things she kept even from her closest friends. The first was the reason she lived with Mal, Evie, Jay, Carlos, and their parents. Kara's mother had died giving birth to her, and her father passed away when she was seven years old. Although her friends knew her mother was gone, they didn't know the full story of her father's death, nor did they know who he really was. They believed he was a homeless drunk who didn't care about her, and Kara preferred to keep it that way. The truth was far more painful: her father had fallen ill, and Kara had cared for him until the day he took his last breath. It was a memory she couldn't bring herself to share.
The second secret was why she always wore something on her head. Kara's hair was an unusual color—silver, shiny silver. When the sun hit it, her hair gleamed. It wasn't blinding, but it certainly drew attention, so she kept it hidden under scarves and hats. For now, those were the only secrets Kara kept. And with that, her story continued, filled with adventures, friendships, and the mysteries she carried deep within.
