Hoppo/ Kerrbox- Is it really you?
Your POV
My dad always told me stories about Australia, how he used to live there, how he surfed with his two best friends, my dad never told me their names but I hope I meet them too. I had an older brother that I had never met. We never really talk about him, mainly because it is too hard for my dad.You see my dad left Australia because my brother died swimming at Bondi beach, he was only 4 at the time. The lifeguard there tried to resuscitate him but unfortunately failed. All these years my dad has been scared to go near a beach again.
I had decided that I was going to Bondi to thank them, I had heard from my dad, that the lifeguard that helped had only just finished his trainee ship. This was 21 years ago, so I hope he still works there. Although I have never met my brother, I wanted to thank the lifeguard that tried to save him, I wanted him to know how grateful I am for even trying to save him.
*2 months later*
The day had finally come, it was the day I was flying to Australia. I packed my bags last week because I was so excited.
The flight surprisingly went by really quick, when I landed, I went straight to baggage claim and my bag was the first out which was extremely lucky. As it was late I decided against going to the beach but I did decide to go to one if the local restaurants/bars called 'The Icebergs'. I walked in and saw a group of men, I guessed they were a group of friends from work because there were some young men and others who looked like they were older than my dad.
I was stood, on my own, near the bar. That was until one of the men from the group came and introduced himself. "G'day, I'm Liam. Don't worry I'm not some creep, my friends saw you were on your own and my boss said you look like an older female version of someone he met several years ago."
"Hi there, I'm Y/N. If you don't mind me asking what's your job?" I asked hoping not to sound weird.
"It's alright, I'm a lifeguard down at Bondi so just down the road." Liam replied, I figured now was the time to ask him.
"Is it alright if you could introduce me to the other lifeguards?" I asked.
"Sure, but just a heads up they don't call me Liam, they call me Itchy. We each have a nickname." I was a bit confused at first but I guess I'll learn. He lead me to the group of guys. "Guys this is Y/N, Y/N this is all the lifeguards."
"Hi Y/N, I'm Bruce, the boss, this is Anthony, this is also Anthony, this is Trent, this is another Trent, this is Jesse, this is Rod, this is Harry, this is Andrew and the rest will introduce themselves later because there are way too many of us." One guy said pointing to a bunch of people.
"Nice to meet you all, Bruce can I talk to you in private for a second?" I asked, he nodded so I led him outside. "Liam said his boss, well you, recognised me. Is that true?" I asked not really sure if I wanted to hear the answer or not.
"Yes I did, you look like an older, female version of a 4 year old boy I sadly failed to resuscitate 21 years ago." He said.
"Wait, your the lifeguard?!" I asked, trying to convince myself, he just nodded. "This is going to sound really weird but please can I hug you?"
"It doesn't sound weird and sure, only if you tell me how your dad is. When he still lived here, he surfed with me and Kerrbox everyday." He said and I looked at him puzzled. "Kerrbox is Rod's nickname. I'm sure Itchy, sorry Liam will explain it later." After he finished I hugged him. "Let's go back inside and you can tell me and Rod all about your dad now. Ok?" I nodded and we walked in.
"Ok so I don't know much about my dad from when he lived here, he doesn't talk about it much because it reminds him of Noah, my older brother, but I do know what happened after he left. So he left with my mum as soon as possible after the incident, because he couldn't stand being near the beach where it happened. The truth is, I've never been to a beach, my dad refuses to set foot on the sand. He's always saying how he felt so guilty about leaving all his friends here and cutting off all contact but he couldn't have anything that reminded him of Noah." Once I finished Bruce and Rod had tears in their eyes.
"I had no idea it affected him that much. Also we are so bringing you to Bondi tomorrow, even if you just sit in the tower." Bruce said whilst wiping his eyes, I just nodded.
I had only briefly met the boys, but I knew if I wanted to learn anything about my dad and Noah then this is where I needed to be. I may only be 20 but I know I have to do this, no matter what my dad says. I am staying in Australia and that's final.
