Fergus, who had been living at Lallybroch for four months following the Battle of Culloden, was standing at the front door of the castle awaiting the arrival of Jenny and Ian Murray's oldest friend, George Whitman and his daughter.

The household could hear the hooves of a pair of horses that carried the father and daughter. As soon as the pair rounded the corner and came into view of the household, Fergus saw a girl his age riding next to an older gentleman. The girl, dressed in a black cape with a hood to hide her hair, and her father, dressed in his dark clothing and the kilt of Lallybroch, made their way into the courtyard and disembarked the horses, allowing a pair of young boys to tend to the horse's needs and to take their belongings inside.

As the father and daughter walked towards the group of people waiting for them, Jenny and Ian met them halfway.

"George Whitman. Its been a long time" Jenny greeted friendly.

"Ah Jenny, you have aged with beauty. If that husband of yours canna fulfil your needs, you come to see me" George replied jokingly.

"You bastard, my leg might no work, but ma cock do," Ian said, hugging the man.

Jenny, who had been smiling at the interaction finally turned to the girl who stood behind her father.

"Surely this is not your bairn?" She asked pointing to the girl.

"Aye, this is my wee Margaret."

"Last we saw you, you were a bairn. A wee bonny lass you were, and still are Margaret." Ian spoke kindly, smiling at the girl.

"My name is Maggie." She announced proudly, almost stubbornly.

"Well then, she has your wife's stubbornness then," Jenny said with a smirk, but quickly changed into a frown. "I am sorry to hear about Josie."

"She is with the Lord now. Waiting for me."George replied with a proud smile.

"I am sure she is. Now, shall we go inside and you to may rest before dinner." Ian responded, already making his way inside.

"Aye, come along Margaret," George said, following the pair.

Maggie made her way after her father, however, stopped at the front door and looked to her left to see a bunch of flowers in the ground, and stopped to collect one, but find it hard because of her dress and corset restricting her ability to bend over. Fergus who had been watching the young girl since the moment she arrived, saw that she wanted a flower and moved to help her bend down to collect one. As he picked up the brightest yellow flower, Maggie stopped her advances and look the boy in the eyes.

"Here you are, madame." He spoke in a french accent, handing her the flower.

Strange, Maggie thought.

"Thank you, you are French?" Maggie acknowledged.

"Oui. I came to Lallybroch with a friend of Mistress Jenny and Master Ian."

"Oh, who? Maybe I know them. My father often has visitors from his childhood here." She replied

"I am not allowed to say. It is of high importance." Fergus replied proudly.

"Well then, shall I see you at dinner?" She asked

"Yes, madame, I will be there. I hope you can save me a seat." Fergus requested.

"Of course, monsieur, Good Day," Maggie responded

After a long rest, George and Maggie joined the rest at the table for dinner. Dressed in a light purple dress, Maggie did as she was asked and saved a seat for Fergus and the two conversed throughout the night. Both of the children became entranced with each other and harmlessly flirted with each other.

After the dinner, the two walked throughout the grounds, keeping up the conversation about each others upbringing and Maggie realised that no matter how long she would be staying at Lallybroch, she would remain friends with Fergus.

A trip that was supposed to last a month turned to six after her father got terribly sick during the winter. In that time, Fergus found it his duty to try and distract Maggie from the possibility that her father would most likely die from the sickness. Most days her would take her to the river with the other children and would play games all day until they had to return to the castle for dinner, and when they did Maggie would become sad and reserved about the fact that her father was dying.

When the fateful day came, Maggie was beside herself. The only one who could calm her down was Fergus. He took her to the river, as he did every day. However, this time was different. He let her cry and scream, only whispering in her ears sweet nothings.

After her father's funeral, Jenny took the girl aside and made her a promise,

"Now my darling, your father asked us to take care of you, and that is just what we will do. You'll live with us from now on, I will love and care for you as if you are my own, you understand?" Jenny said motherly.

Maggie just nodded meekly and made her way back to Lallybroch.
