That same day, Jamie and Claire came back from their travels saying that they were going after a kidnapped Ian on a boat. Unfortunately, they did not allow the two secretly married couple to go with them. However, the two wanted to go with them and snuck on board of the ship Jamie and Claire had just stepped aboard. Paying the ship's captain, the couple hid below decks and tried to keep out of the sight of Jamie and Claire.
Unfortunately, they were caught early in the voyage when Jamie and CLaire decided to walk below decks and came upon Fergus, trying to find some food.
"Fergus? What are you doing here? I told you to stay at home!" Jamie said.
"I am sorry, Milord. We couldn't resist coming to help." Fergus replied.
"We?" Claire asked, surprised.
"Oops," Fergus said meekly.
"Where is she?" Claire asked, knowing who else was on board.
"Follow me, Milady," Fergus said.
The duo followed the Frenchman and he led them to his wife, up on deck and towards the back of the ship because Maggie was getting sick of being hidden and convinced Fergus to allow her ten minutes do long as she doesn't make it know that she was there.
"Maggie? Look who I found.." Fergus said to Maggie.
"Claire! Jamie! What a surprise!" Maggie said, trying to act like she hadn't known they were on board.
"Ah, save it. Well, there is nothing we can do now." Jamie said obviously disappointed but knowing he can do anything.
"What are you doing here anyway?" Claire asked Maggie.
"We thought that we would help you find Ian, and we didn't want to be left behind." She replied. "Plus, we wanted to have a honeymoon!"
"Honeymoon?" Claire asked in disbelief.
"Maggie and I are handfasted," Fergus explained, looking down to his wife with a face full of love.
As the two of them look at each other, Claire and Jamie look at each other in shock.
"Handfasted?!" Jamie asks.
"Last night," Maggie confirmed.
Jamie looked at Fergus mad, whilst Claire looked at Maggie with such joy.
"Congratulations!" she said to the woman.
"Has he touched ya?" Jamie asked Maggie, obviously mad.
"Jamie!" Claire said.
Fergus gave the answer away by looking out to the sea.
"Of course you have!" Jamie said roughly. After finding out that they had been bedded, yet there were no witnesses and therefore the marriage was not legally binding.
"Well, we will have to have a proper wedding another time," Jamie said, now coming to terms with the idea of the two in love. "But Fergus will bunk with me, and Maggie you will bunk with Claire. I will not have you touching each other until you are married, do ye understand?" He asked sternly. The two just nodded their heads, obviously not liking the idea but understood.
"We've been apart 20 years and you want me to room with Maggie?" Claire asks.
"I'm obliged to protect her virtue from now on," replies Jamie.
"Mine as well, it seems," Claire harrumphs.
------------
Later that night Jamie, although not happy with the arrangement, is below deck being alternately ill and fatherly, giving Fergus advice about his relationship with Maggie, whilst Maggie is on deck, trying to subdue her seasickness and stargazing.
The days continue to bleed together for everyone until the ship, rather abruptly, halts at sea. They have lost the wind. The ship's crew blame bad luck — they become intent on finding the man (or women) who didn't touch the lucky horseshoe before the voyage. The weeks go by and the crew is looking for someone to two overboard for a scapegoat.
One of Jamie's men is singled out is and tormented relentlessly. Drunk and out of sorts, the man climbs the ship's mast, threatening to jump. Jamie climbs after him starts to talk him down. Throughout the whole ideal, Fergus looks out for Maggie and is constantly around her if anyone wants to start anything.
But the man slips and grips Jamie's hand for dear life. After a few moments dangling precariously, the man is finally able to swing himself to the rope ladder and descend safely. Well, not that safely, because his feet hardly hit the timbers before he's encircled by the crew thirsting to throw him overboard. Fergus takes Maggie's hand and leads her away from the crowd, and away from any potential danger.
Then all of a sudden, Mr Wiloughby sees a bird in the sky and tells a story about a Chinese emperor, biding for the time until the wind picks up again. The bird's flight pattern had indicated a storm was brewing, and Willoughby was biding his time until the wind picked back up and the crew would no longer need a scapegoat.
All of the tensions are diminished and Claire and Jamie head down below deck to 'celebrate' whilst Fergus and Maggie go to the bow of the ship and Maggie leans back into Fergus lovingly, both looking out to the horizon, having a moment to themselves.
However, this happiness does not last long and soon, the two spot a ship in the distance. After shouting from Fergus to alert the crew, a British man-of-war soon engages with the ship. Jamie and Claire soon come onto the deck and stand near Fergus and Maggie, all of whom are standing in the middle of the deck.
Jamie voices his worries to the group that they're recruiting and he'll be forced into service. He makes Claire promise that she'll continue the search for Young Ian on her own if need be.
"I promise," She says.
"We will too, Milord," Fergus added, nodding to Maggie who agrees.
As the captain boards the ship, Jamies worries were all for nought. They are in need of a surgeon, not soldiers.
"We have had an outbreak." The captain said loudly, "Is there a surgeon on board?" He asked.
Claire, of course, volunteers to help. She deduces from the description of the symptoms: fever and rash, that the ship's crew has fallen ill with typhoid fever, something she's inoculated against.
"I cannot get the disease. I will be fine." She promises Jamie with a kiss.
Thinking that she would treat the infected as the ship was anchored, Claire boards the ship and begins to assess the situation. The situation is grave but promises to help. She tells the captain that she will stay on board the anchored ship to help organize and treat the unhealthy crew members.
As she starts, however, the ship starts moving with the wind. She goes on the deck and asks the captain harshly,
"What the hell are you doing? You cannot take me!" She yells.
The captain just tells her that they are going to Jamaica, and that she cannot go back to the ship.
"Jamie!" She yells, running to the back of the ship.
"Claire!" He yells back to her, Fergus holding Maggie, knowing that their plan had changed.
