A few years after Maggie arrived at Lallybroch, Maggie and Fergus' friendship has become stronger and the two are inseparable.  Yet, there was always one thing that he hid from her; the identity of Jamie Fraser.  It was the one secret that he had been able to keep, and as much as he didn't want to, he knew that he had too, to keep Jamie alive.  However, this all changed because of a simple gun that the children found in the dovecote.  The gun belonged to Rabbie McNab's father who is dead.  The children hid it again once they realised that a patrol of Redcoats arrived at the estate.

"I'm here for the Dubonnet," one of them tells Ian, explaining that he's heard rumours about a reclusive man who lives in the wilderness and wears a brown hat in order to hide his red hair: "I surmise that the Dunbonnet and Red Jamie are one and the same."

Jenny, hugely pregnant, comes out to say that the family hasn't heard from Jamie since Battle of Culloden, and reminds the Redcoats that she's told the exact same thing to every group of soldiers that have visited the house since the failed rising. The soldiers remind the family that there's a reward for information leading to Red Jamie's capture and that harbouring him is an act of treason, and they then haul Ian off to prison.  However, Jenny was lying and everyone but Maggie knew that Jamie was alive and sparingly comes back to the estate to help.

Later on, Fergus saw a raven land on one of the walls.  Deciding to show how manly he is to Maggie, he tries to shoot the bird.  However, of course, he misses with the gunshot making a loud blast throughout the area.  Not long after the missed shot, a rugged man approached Maggie and Fergus.  Fergus didn't seem phased by the appearance of the man which confused Maggie.

Simultaneously, Jenny was in labour and one of the maids came out and told the rugged man that it was a boy, which confused Maggie even more.

Who is here?

Why is he here?

Why did the maid tell him about Jenny?

Why is Fergus not surprised by his appearance?

As the man took the gun from Fergus' hand, he went into the house following the maid and Fergus and Maggie stayed outside.  As Maggie watched as he hid it, she had an inquisitive look on her face.  Fergus turned around sleeplessly, thinking that he was going to have to explain why the man had come, but as he turned the duo heard the gallop of horses.

The patrol of redcoats from not long ago arrived and immediately, Fergus walked towards Maggie as if this would keep her safe.  The maid from before walked back outside to address the patrol.

"Good Evening sirs.  Can I help yous?" She questioned.

"We heard a gunshot in this area.  You are not harbouring illegal belongings are you miss?" The gentleman in front asked.

"Of course no, sir.  I dinna hear any shot. I was tending to my mistress who has just given birth." She replied.

"Then you wouldn't mind if we searched the premises." The man put bluntly, not believing her.  "Show me to your mistress."

As the maid and a few of the men went inside, Fergus and Maggie stayed outside where the remaining men searched the courtyard.

As time passes the men had searched every possible nook and cranny and turned their attention to the duo.  Fergus, sensing that something was about to happen held onto Maggie's hand.

Just as a man with rotten teeth, who looked like he could really hurt the two teenagers, the man from inside can out and order that there was nothing here and that they were to go.

"Come along, Gentlemen." He commanded.

As the redcoats left the grounds, the two teens raced inside to see if anything was wrong.

A few hours after those events, Maggie and Fergus had a spare few hours to kill before dinner.  Maggie, who had been distracted by the appearance of that man, finally asked Fergus all that she wanted to know.

"Fergus," he turns to look at the girl, "who was that man?"

Fergus turns back to look at the distance.  "If I tell you, you can not tell anyone.  Swear it to me, Maggie."  Fergus says.

"I swear"  Maggie replies.
