After the long conversation of who the mysterious man was, Fergus and Maggie take a walk in the forest.
"So Jamie Fraser is the man, he saved you in France and brought you back here. You left him before the battle and she survived but his wife and unborn baby have disappeared?" She summaries.
"Oui, Milady has disappeared. MIlord is devastated and we have to keep him secret so he is safe." Fergus explained again, making sure she understood that she can not tell anyone.
As they finish up their conversation, they heard a group of other voices. Not too far away, they saw the bright red coats of four red coats on patrol.
"We should head back Fergus, don't let them see us," Maggie whispered.
"I do not fear them!" Fergus declared loudly, alerting the group to the two young teenagers.
"What do we have here then?" One of them asked, walking closer, "A pretty little lady, huh?"
Fergus immediately regretted alerting their attention because they brought it towards the one thing he wanted to keep safe. Maggie stepped behind Fergus as he stood in front of her, keeping her safe. Soon enough, the four men were surrounding the duo.
"Don't look at her. Do your wives not keep your company enough that you would look to a girl?" Fergus taunted, looking them each in the eyes.
"How dare you talk to us like that, you french scum." One said.
Sensing there was prominent danger, Fergus whispered to Maggie, run. As soon as there was a break in their circle, Maggie grabbed Fergus' hand and pulled him with her as they tried to escape, sprinting. Immediately, the men ran after them and quickly caught up. Two of the men grabbed Maggie and the other two grabbing Fergus.
"Leave her alone, salauds." Fergus yelled as Maggie was crying out also.
Wanting to get out of their grips, Fergus spat in the faces of the men holding him.
"You little shit! I'll teach you!" One of the men holding Fergus said, making him look at him. "Hold him down!" He commanded.
One of the men that was holding Maggie helped another man to hold Fergus down, stretching his arm out as the man who spoke withdrew his sword.
Maggie, sensing what was about to happen shouted for help, but was quickly quietened but the man holding her, placing his hand over her mouth. She immediately bit his hand which resulted in a hard slap to her face which ending up cutting her face with his ring. Dulled and in pain, Maggie could do nothing as the man holding her pushed her against the ground making her watch what was about to happen by holding her hair.
Before Fergus could stop anyone from hurting him and Maggie, the man with the sword brought it down upon his hand, cutting it clean off. The scream that came from both of the children echoed throughout the forest, scaring off any wildlife in the area. Once the redcoats had cut off his hand, the one with the sword turned to Maggie, threatening her before kicking her in the stomach, making her cry out in pain. Fergus who was in shock did not utter a word in her defence, instead just staring at the stump that was profusely bleeding. Once they had hurt the young teenagers enough, the four men went on their way, laughing as they went.
Hearing the screams from afar, Jamie Fraser came upon the scene and was also in shock. Fergus, a boy like his son, was now crying in pain and Maggie tended to his wound, trying to comfort him. Running down the hill to get to Fergus, Jamie asked what happened to which Maggie replied,
"Redcoats."
"Dinna be afeared. I've watched milady do this many times," Jamie said to Fergus kindly and softly as he tied a tourniquet around the stump with his belt.
Knowing that he could die, Jamie picked Fergus up into his arms, with the help of Maggie and hurried back to Lallybroch, knowing that if he got caught, he would be killed.

A while later, Fergus all patched up and is feeling tired after his talk with Jamie, Maggie goes into the room to talk to the boy.
"Fergus, are you awake?" Maggie whispered into the room.
"Oui," Fergus replied, happy to see her ok.
"How are you feeling?"The girl asks timidly, feeling guilty.
"Better, how are you?" He asks.
"I am so sorry, Fergus. I should have tried harder to stop them." Maggie responded, tears forming in her eyes.
"Do not talk like that, Maggie. It was my own fault. I should have never gotten their attention. You would not have been hurt." Fergus said, ashamed.
Knowing that this would have gone back and forth for a while, Maggie decided,
"Let us just say that we both did wrong things and that we are sorry."
"I would like that." after a moment of thought, Fergus added, "I was so scared."
"It is ok now, you will learn how to live without your hand, and I will help you," Maggie said.
"No, not for me or my hand. I was scared that they were going to..." He stops himself before he could say what he was truly thinking. That they could have hurt her, more than just bruises.
"I am ok, and you will be too." She said, grabbing his other hand, whilst climbing into bed as well. "All will be well."
After she said this, both of them fell asleep in each others company, completely at peace.
