Chapter 18: Between Shadows

It was a summer night, but it was also snowing. The roof of our house was already blanketed with white, as well as the grounds. The fire on the torches already died, the moon is the only one illuminating the world outside.

Somehow, I couldn't sleep. There's an onerous feeling in my chest that I can't perceive, like something bad is about to happen.

"Cine, bakit gising ka pa, anong oras na..." I heard my sister, Courtney, said in a sleepy voice.

My eyes remained staring at the window. "Ate, hindi ako makatulog. Hindi ako mapakali, parang..."

"Hmm? Matulog ka na, baka pagod ka lang sa training kanina."

I remained silent. Training... Right, we were having training, we did attend one earlier... We did, that's why I'm tired...

Training... Why are we having training again? What are we training for? I tried to recall back the reason, but my head just throbbed from thinking.

There's a place filled with magic where we do training and schooling. A lot of kids like me are also there, but I don't have anyone to talk to because they were all avoiding me.

Our teachers and trainers were all kind though, they seem to be considerate of me and always treat me differently from the other kids. Like total... different. I suddenly remember the woman who taught us earlier, the one who can fly. Everyone seemed to be more scared of her than the ice mage like me who has the same eyes as mine.

But... Why are we doing this? I already forgot how I ended up in that place, and I just realized now why there's another magical school, some sort of thing existing aside from the one at the kingdom of Peirronia.

When I returned my gaze at the window, I saw tiny lights moving from afar. They were moving closer, and closer, until I finally had a clearer view of what those lights were, fire torches. A brigade was marching towards our hamlet, a man on a white stallion was leading them.

"Ate, they're here..." I called her, my voice was quivering.

"Ha? Ano yun Cine?" She asked while still getting back to sleep.

"Enemies, the enemies are here..."

The group stopped meters away from the hamlet, Ate Courtney peeked and was forcing me to get out already, her voice combining with the brigade's leader's resonating declaration of treason from killing the queen... his queen...

"Show yourselves or I'm going to burn this whole place with you all!" Their leader, a king, declared.

Before Ate Courtney dragged me, I remembered the ocean blue eyes of their leader, flickering in the dark, covered with rage, his voice resonating with wrath. Then, a man beside him, with ebony eyes and a scar on his left cheek, was smiling sinisterly, staring right at my direction, muttering some words I tried to read from his mouth.
