"The brain is the human body's most mysterious organ. It learns. It changes. It adapts. It tells us what we see, what we hear. It lets us feel love. I think it holds our soul. But no matter how much research we do, no one can really say how all the delicate gray matter inside our skull works. And when it's hurt, when the human brain is traumatized, well, that's when it gets even more mysterious."
-Callie Torres, S7E18, "Song Beneath the Song"

"After a trauma your body is at its most vulnerable. Response time is critical. So you're suddenly surrounded by people. Doctors, nurses, specialists, technicians. Surgery is a team sport. Everyone pushing for the finish line. Putting you back together again. But surgery is a trauma in and of itself. And once it's over, the real healing begins. We call it recovery. Recovery is not a team sport. It's a solitary distance run. It's long, it's exhausting and it's lonely as hell. The length of your recovery is determined by the extent of your injuries. And it's not always successful. No matter how hard we work at it, some wounds might never fully heal. You might have to adjust to a whole new way of living. Things may have changed too radically to ever go back to what they were. It might not even recognize yourself. It's like you haven't recovered anything at all. You're a whole new person with a whole new life."
-Meredith Grey, S7E19, "It's a Long Way Back"

"Germs, disease, toxins. Our bodies encounter dangers all the time, just beneath the surface. Hidden. Whether you realize it or not, your body is constantly protecting itself. Every time you blink your eye, you wash away thousands of unwanted microbes. Breathe in too much unwanted pollen and you sneeze. The body knows when it's encountered something that doesn't belong. The body detects the invader, it releases its white blood cells and it attacks. Just when we think we've figured things out, the universe throws us a curveball. So we have to improvise. We find happiness in unexpected places. We find our way back to the things that matter the most. The universe is funny that way. Sometimes it just has a way of making sure we wind up exactly where we belong."
-Meredith Grey, S7E20, "White Wedding"

Things at the hospital were crazy after Callie and Arizona were brought in after a bad car accident. Callie went through the windshield, and her and her baby's injuries were serious, so Addison was called to Seattle Grace Mercy West to deliver her premature baby.

"It's not looking good. The baby's stable for now, but she's so tiny." Addison said lowly, standing beside Anna outside the NICU, "Things could've gone a little better if Dr. Fields did her job correctly."

"What do you mean?" Anna asked.

"There's protocol to cases like this. Cases involving an injured mother and baby," Addison explained, "There's things you check off the list, look for immediately because of the damage they can cause, and she... she missed things."

"Callie's out of surgery." Anna said, "Are you gonna tell Mark?"

Mark stood inside the NICU, staring down at his newborn daughter who he couldn't even touch.

"Yeah." Addison put her hand on Anna's shoulder before quietly entering the room and speaking to Mark. Anna looked at the ground, hoping everyone would be okay.

~ GREY'S ANATOMY ~

"Yesterday, at the baby shower, I was jealous of Callie because she got pregnant... without trying. And we try. I get shots, I take my temperature, I put my legs in the air and nothing. The universe says, 'Screw you, Meredith,' and gives Callie a kid. And then puts Callie through a windshield. I mean, what the hell is going on? What's the point? I mean, is there a reason for this? Because if you can think of a reason, any reason at all, why the universe is so screwed up... and random, and mean, now would be an amazingly good time to tell me because I really need some answers!"
