Juliet | Present time
Do you ever have that peacefull feeling of serenity? Where you're drifting through a void with no thoughts and no worries?
Well I was in that state at the moment. Drifting through sleep while my head was lying face down in my lovely fluffy pillows.
Untill a shrill ringing sliced through the air, making me jump up in surprise and fall out of bed. I landed on the ground with a soft thud and groaned as I glared at my phone ringing on my bedside table.
It's only 6 o clock?! I wasn't supposed to get up for another half hour. I mumbled profanities under my breath and shimmied closer to the nightstand, still on the floor.
"Hello?" I grumbled as I pressed the device to my ear.
"Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday dear Jay-Jay! Happy birthday to you!" I flinched at the loud voice.
"Everest... I'm going to kill you." I grumbled as I hoisted myself up from the floor and laid back down on the bed.
"Well someone's in a mood today." he mumbled through the speaker. I frowned. Of course I was in a mood today. Today was the one day a year where I got to wallow in self pitty and forget my happy exterior that I've learned to put on.
"No I'm sorry Ev. I just woke up so I'm a bit cranky." I said smiling apologetically.
"Don't worry about it sweetheart. I understand." He said.
Everest knew about my brother. Along with Vee, my other best friend. They were the only ones outside of my familly that actually knew what really happened that night. Appart from the whole 'Jason' thing. They only knew that the crash was because of me.
Everyone else thought he was driving back from his best friend Noah's house When a drunk driver hit him.
And I preffered it that way. I didn't want people to look at me with any more pity than they already were.
"We all miss him today, honey. Now get up and get dressed because we're going to school." Ev said.
My eyes widened as I started shaking my head, even though he couldn't see me.
"No Ev. You know I don't go to school on my birthday." I said quickly.
"Too bad. We're already outside your house." He said and I could practically hear the smirk plastered on his glasses-wearing face.
I groaned into the phone and rolled my eyes. "We?" I asked, but I already knew who it was.
"Yeah. Me and Vee." he said.
"Hay bitch!" I heard Vee scream from beside Everest.
I chuckled and nodded. "Okay I'm comming." I said and ended the call. I ignored my desheveled appearance in the mirror and rushed downstairs to open the door for him.
When I walked past the kitchen a note stuck on the refrigirator caught my eye and I slowly walked over to it.
I took the note from the magnet and frowned as the neatly written words found its way to my brain.
Happy birthday
Your present is in a coffee mug in my office. Your mother and I left to New York for that Willson Case.
Dad
I bit my lip and forced the tears to climb back into their hole and die.
I didn't know why I expected anything different. I should be used to this by now. It was my second birthday without my brother and my parents decided to take a business trip.
