Ash POV
"I'll see what I can do," I said. "I'm gonna ask my parents to see if they have a plan."
"Good idea," said Bobby. "They are detectives after all."
We said goodbye and hung up. I put my phone down and started thinking.
What if Benjamin Davis really was innocent? We shouldn't jump to conclusions without knowing for sure.
I decided to go down and tell them what happened. I saw dad sitting on the couch watching a movie.
"Hey Ash," said Dad. "What's up? You look like you're bursting with excitement!"
"I am," I said. "We need a way to find out if Benjamin Davis is the crook. Because we don't really know if he's the one who is to blame!"
I explained the whole thing to him and he started laughing.
"He seriously thought that you guys would buy that?" Dad asked between laughter. "And what makes it worse is Mr Davis actually bought that?"
"Apparently," I said with a shrug. "It's his brother after all. Maybe that's why."
"What are you two talking about?" Mom asked, coming into the living room. "Sounds like it was something funny, considering how you were laughing so hard..."
We told her the story. She started laughing too.
"Something tells me he is the crook," said mom. "You said there weren't any e-hailing stickers right?"
"Nope," I said.
"Well then, he's lying," mom said. "Because my friend works for Pickyou during the weekends and she said that it's compulsory to have those stickers on your car."
"So that just aroused our suspicions even more," dad said. "Alright lets discuss after dinner."
"I just prepared some so let's eat," mom said. "Actually I came here to call you two."
So we had our dinner. Mom prepared some tasty tortilla wraps. It was good...
"I have a plan," mom said after putting the dishes away. "We police officers are allowed to use the truth serum for our interrogation."
"Really?" I asked. "That's great! Can you use it on him?"
"No we can't," said dad. "But you guys can?"
"Wait what?" I asked, confused. "Why us?"
"Because you guys are just kids," said mom. "If you guys do it, he wouldn't suspect a thing! But if we, police officers, suddenly just show up in front of him and give him something that contains the truth serum, do you think he'd take it?"
"Hmm that's true too," I said. "So I guess it's up to us now."
"Yeah it is," dad said. "Go to your friend, Bobby's place tomorrow. His uncle might be there again, so just give it to him, and get the truth out of him. But just remember, record whatever he says. You guys need proof."
"I will," I said. "Thanks for the tip."
"Wait let me get the truth serum for you," said mom and went up to her room.
She came back with a bottle that was labelled. She handed it to me and told me to keep it safely and to not overuse it. I thanked them and ran up to my room.
I did another conference call and told the others about this.
"Great news!" I said shouting over the phone. "I've got a secret weapon!"
"What is it?" Penelope asked. "Anything... dangerous?"
"Not really dangerous," I said. "I've got the TRUTH SERUM! Bobby, your uncle is visiting you guys tomorrow too right?"
"Course he is," said Bobby. "That maniac visits everyday these days!"
"Isn't that already a red flag?" Daniel asked. "I mean, the uncle that hardly ever visited is dropping by every single day?"
"It is," said Linda. "But dad just thinks that he's excited to see me again after years."
"But he doesn't even bother with Lindie," said Bobby. "Only acknowledges her when he sees her around."
"So I call a meeting at Bobby's place tomorrow," I said. "To carry out our plan."
"Sorry, can't make it," said Daniel. "I have no transport."
"But it's literally Sunday tomorrow," said Penelope. "I'm sure your mom has some time."
"Mom and Gabriel has to go to the police station to bail my dad out," said Daniel. "He doesn't deserve to go to jail for something he hadn't done."
"Well, are you going?" I asked.
"No..." said Daniel. "Mom wouldn't let me."
"Then why don't you just come here?" Bobby asked. "You can drive right? I bet your mom and your bro are only gonna take one car."
"Yeah I actually forgot about that," said Daniel. "Alright, I'll come."
"You're so lame," said Penelope. "Well yeah, you were the jerk that used to enter the girls' bathroom to just bully us..."
"Stop that, Pen!" Daniel exclaimed. "That was a long time ago!"
"Are you sure?" I asked. "Wasn't it just last month?"
"Urgh!" Daniel groaned. "Fine, you win. I was a jerk back then, okay?"
We laughed and hung up. Tomorrow is gonna be a big day. We're so gonna get the truth out of him!
So that night, I slept peacefully. I even had a dream of handcuffing Linda's uncle, as if I was the police officer! What a weird dream, but still, soo satisfying!
I went down for breakfast and saw that mom made french toast, something that I had been craving for weeks.
I went to the dining hall and sat down to eat my breakfast with my family.
"So what time are you guys gonna go to Bobby's?" Mom asked, putting a plate of french toast and a cup of hot cocoa in front of me. "You're going today right?"
"Of course we are," I said. "Bobby says that guy visits everyday these days."
"He seems like a creep to me," said dad. "We better keep an eye on him."
"Yeah we better," said mom. "He's an evil fella."
I nodded and continued with my breakfast. It was good. We only decided to carry out our plan after lunch, so I had a bunch of free time. I realised that Penelope had uploaded lots of chapters that I haven't read yet.
So I decided to binge on them before lunch. They were good actually. She had like eight published books, including the book of short stories. I saw a few short stories in there. So this is what she's always writing in her free time, huh?
I even saw the two essays we wrote together in there. She corrected them a little and changed some of the words to look better.
I have no idea why I haven't bothered to read the short stories before this. Because if I had, I would've already known that she's Poppythebest. Oh well, it's a small world after all.
Lunch time came and I got ready right after eating the spaghetti and meatballs that my mom made.
