( CHAPTER ONE )

"Hailey, please!" Hailey Henderson had sat on the couch, staring at her brother as he pleads to get her off the couch so he could gather some extra quarters for the arcade he and his friends were going to tonight. "Move, please! This is an emergency!"

Hailey lets out a groan and stands up, Dustin messed up the couch, only to spot a penny that had slipped down the crack. "Another stupid penny!" Dustin had thrown the penny aimlessly, almost hitting Mews. Mews sat on their Mum, Claudia on the armchair and she scowled at him.

"Dusty, watch it! You almost hit Mews," Claudia warns him.

"Dusty, if you want money so bad, you should work for it." Hailey fixes up the pillows as he moves to their Mum.

"If you want money so bad, you should work for it," Dustin mocked Hailey's voice and she glared at him and sat on the couch. "Don't you think I've tried?" He turned to his mother, stressed. "Can I please check under your cushions?"

Claudia gave her son a look. "Dusty..."

"Mum, please?" Dustin whined and Hailey crossed her legs. "Its an emergency!" They both groaned at each other and Claudia got up, Claudia talks to Mews and Dustin had found quarters. He grinned. "Love you, Mum,"

Dustin was almost out the door. "Yeah, love you too!" Hailey replied sarcastically, watching him walk into his room.

Hailey smirked a little and walked up to her room, she walked over to the draw and there sat was the money jar that she had been saving from working.

She grabbed all the quarters she could find in the jar, which was about ten quarters in total and she walked down the stairs again to find Dustin almost out the door. "Wait!" Hailey called out to him and he paused, turning around to his sister.

She approached him and held out the ten quarters. He stares with wide eyes. "Really?" He asked in disbelief.

"It's your last holiday," she reminded him and placed them in his hands. "Go knock yourself out." Dustin looked up at her; grinning and he wrapped his arms around her, she hugged back chuckling.

"Love you too!" Dustin excitedly ran out of the door, grabbing his bike and racing down the street.

Ever since what happened last year, Dustin and Hailey had grown even closer than they were before. They promised each other to never keep a secret from each other now that they both know what really exists out there.

They have become very protective of each other. Dustin would always defend his sister whenever this worker at the araced named Keith would try to get Dustin to get them to go out on a date. And whenever a bully was struck Dustin's way, Hailey would always fight back.

Hailey woke up with dread that next morning. It was the first day back at school and she personally didn't want to go back to that hell-hole.

Though she had a strong feeling that this year would be different than most. Firstly, she actually has friends like Steve. Steve and Hailey had become very close over the Summer of 1983, they even spent New Years together rather than going to some big party. Steve had tried to convince himself to gt over his small crush on her, and it worked, he ended up falling in love with Nancy instead. Steve and Hailey were better off as best friends, he figured.

Nancy and Hailey become friends, rather than just acquaintances. After what happened last year, they couldn't seem to ignore each other, so without even realising it, they became friends and Hailey was excited as Nancy was her first real girl friend.

Lucky last, Jonathan. They were sort of friends before, but now they were really close. With their little brothers hanging out constantly and Jonathan practically going everywhere where they went, Hailey would always join Jonathan to keep him company.

Which is what Jonathan is doing right now. Jonathan always picks up Hailey for school now as her house was on the way, even though she told him countless times; don't bother, I'll ride my bike he still refuses.

Now, Jonathan and Hailey sat in his car, listening to Jonathan's mix taps, jamming out together. The jamming slowly stopped when they arrived in Hawkin's High School and Hailey bites her lower lip nervously.

"Hey, its gonna be all right," Jonathan assured her. "The monster is dead, Will is back, everything's gonna go back to normal." Oh, how she wished she could believe that. He pulled into a park and stopped the car. They got their things and climbed out of Jonathan's vehicle.

A loud engine roars through the car park catching the attention of many high school students in the area, a blue Camaro pulled up into the parking space. A curly blonde typical-looking 'bad boy' had stepped out of the car, along with another a redhead girl who looked like could be Hailey's brothers' year and had skated off.

Hailey rolled her eyes. Oh, no. A new student and he looks like he could cause some trouble. Hailey had made eye contact with the blonde boy, all the girls in the car park were staring at him, some were almost envying Hailey, wishing they could get noticed by him.

He winked at Hailey and Hailey scrunched up her face in disgust. No way would she fall for a dude like that. Besides, he was smoking. She shakes her head and closes Jonathan's car door, the blonde guy smirks to himseld and walked off.

Jonathan locks his car and sighed. "Smells like trouble to me,"

"Oh," Hailey groaned as they begin to walk out on the school car parks lot. "I just want a year that is trouble-free, is that too much to ask?" She noticed Nancy and Steve walking ahead of them, Steve's arms wrapped around Nancy. "Incoming!" She yelled, picking up her pace; running towards them.

Steve instantly recognised that voice and lets go of Nancy, and he leans forward and lets out an 'oof' when Hailey had jumped upon his back, laughing as he caught her easily. Hailey wrapped her arms loosely around his neck, Steve had placed his hands under her legs to he could give her a piggyback ride.

Nancy looked up at them, smiling. "Thanks for the warning this time," Steve tells her. The last time they had done this, they ended up collapsing on the floor and Steve spraining his wrist. Nancy didn't feel the need to be jealous of them anymore, she knew she loved him and he loved her.

Jonathan watched from behind before walking off, smiling to himself a little. Jonathan still didn't feel comfortable joining the little group that they had formed, even though Steve had completely changed as person, Jonathan still liked to keep to himself.

"Hey, Steve, guess what we have first?" Hailey asks in a sing-song tone, sarcastically. She ignored all the looks they were receiving, people couldn't believe it. King Steve and The Nerd were actually friends.

"History," Steve grumbled, they both hated History with a passion. It's something they both like to have a good bitch about.

"Our favourite subject," Hailey continued sarcastically, rolling her eyes and letting out a huff. Then bell rings, Nancy laughed at the two.

Steve turned to Nancy with Hailey on his back. "You have Chem first?" He asks her and she nods as they stand outside Nancy's door. They lean in and kiss. "Love you,"

"Love you too," she beamed before turning to her class and Steve turns on his feet.

"Are you gonna hop off now?" Steve asks. "'Cause, you're kinda getting heavy," he joked.

She gasped. "I'm not heavy," she protested. "And because of that comment, you're gonna carry me around all day whenever we see each other." He sighed, but didn't protest because he didn't mind; she was light as a feather. "Yeehaw, Steve,"

"Shut up, I'm not a horse," Steve continued to walk down the hallway, making their way to their History class and Hailey laughed to herself, acting like a clown and students giving her looks, but at that moment; she couldn't care less.
