ryan knew he was different. he always knew.
he knew most kids didn't sit on their bed thinking about all the ways they could run away. and not run away from home.
he knew that other kids thought that.
he thought about all the ways he could run from himself. hide in a corner of his mind where he'd be safe.
safe.
ryan didn't feel safe. he never did. but he knew he was meant to.
he knew.
he knew a lot of things. like how to write, how to read, how to cook, how to clean. he knew how to do normal things. but he also knew how to do other things. like how to do taxes, how to take care of a baby who was a mere three years younger than him. how to do things normal kids didn't know how to do.
so when people kept telling him he was different. he knew. he didn't deny it and wondered why it was a bad thing.
"you're so weird!" someone would scream at him.
"i know" he'd speak back.
but every time they said it to him it became more true. he couldn't escape from them.
sometimes he'd run away from himself. sometimes he'd run away from home. sometimes he'd run away from school.
those escapes made him smile a little bit. they made him happy. until he stepped onto the road and didn't move when a car came barreling toward him. he smiled. he let it hit him. and when he heard someone's small voice whisper to him;
"you're so stupid"
he didn't open his eyes, he didn't say sorry. he did smile, he laughed just slightly.
"i know"
