Five pairs of eyes stared at Gabriel. Their eyes were big and bloodshot red. When Gabriel tried to approach the small creatures, they cowered away and hid.
"I won't hurt you," she murmured.
After the meeting with the other boy, Gabriel found herself lost. She went from one place to another; each was as unfamiliar as the other. And so far, the only demons she had encountered were five small demons. They were babies, around the age of one to three. They weren't like the human babies. They were distorted, ragged, and so different in many ways. It was as if their faces had experienced all kinds of pain. But if they felt those pains, they didn't show it.
"You are different," said the other demon child.
In fact, they could already talk. They were much more mature than the other babies.
Gabriel lay down on the soft patch of grass, maybe in that way, she'd be less threatening, and the demon children would come out of their hiding.
"I am lost." She stared at the dark sky. Just that. No stars or whatsoever. It was an empty void of blackness. She wondered then if any of the demons have seen beauty before. "I don't have a place to stay."
"Because you are different, are you going to hurt us?"
Gabriel smiled. They were different, but so alike in many ways, too.
"No, I won't. I promise you that."
"But people like you kill my kind. We are accused of possessing humans. We are ugly," whispered the other one.
"She is soo pretty," added by the soft voice.
"Pretty girls kill ugly children.”
"I'm scared of her. She's too beautiful. Momma warned me not to get close to beautiful people. She said that they will kill me."
So it was the same, Gabriel thought. Just as mortal mothers warn their children to stay away from evil looking people.
Gabriel sat up and leaned her back against the tree. "Once there was a beautiful man, so beautiful and gracious and graceful you'd feel all the comfort in the world when you're next to him. He soars through the sky like a bird locked in a prison, finally able to spread his wings and fly free. The man couldn't have asked for more. He had everything. He radiates beauty and peace. Loved by everyone, he started to show off more. He thinks he can shine more." Gabriel paused and noticed that the five demon children had settled themselves in front of her with a measured distance. She smiled at this, thinking she was having some progress with the children. “And so, he went to a place filled with love, a place where everyone worships all kinds of goodness, and this man was in awe. He felt like he was being praised by so much more. He started to crave for everything. He wanted the spotlight. He wanted to be God.”
