**** 1 week later****
So far, what Ava said was true. She was really over Maya. She barely talked about Maya and she stayed away from her at work. Ava was back to hanging out with Bri a lot. As a matter of fact, the two had been inseparable lately. Ava really needed Bri to get over Maya, and of course Bri didn't mind helping.
Tonight they were supposed to be going out to a small bar. Nothing fancy. They just wanted to get out the house for a while.
The bar was nice and cozy. The two decided to sit next to each other at a booth. They both ordered one alcoholic drink and some food. They were both enjoying themselves. Bri was facing Ava when someone walked behind her and Ava's eyes widened.
"What is it?" Bri asked wondering what made Ava's face go blank. She turned around and didn't see anyone.
"It's her" Ava said.
"Who? Maya?" Bri asked.
"Yeah. She's with some guy. They just sat down at a table" Ava said putting her head down.
"Come on. We can just leave. I'll tell them to cancel the order. We can go somewhere else and finish our good night!" Bri said energetically trying to uplift Ava.
"No, no. It's fine. We can stay" Ava responded.
"Are you sure?" Bri asked.
"Yeah" Ava replied.
Bri tried to continue the conversation. She was trying hard to keep Ava's attention, but she noticed Ava kept looking behind her every now and then. Bri even scooted closer to Ava and touched her hand as she talked, but Ava's attention was dead set on whatever was behind her. Finally, Bri turned around and saw that Maya was standing at the bar ordering drinks.
Bri sighed and put her head down. She knew Ava wasn't over Maya. "Do you want to go...?? Bri said while tilting her head towards Maya.
"What? Oh... no" Ava said as she snapped back to reality.
"Maybe it will give you the closure you need" Bri said.
"You think so?" Ava asked.
"Yeah, girl. Just go say hi. See what she has to say."
"Ok, ok" Ava replied. She sat there for a few more seconds trying to get the courage to go over. She took a LONG sip of her drink and slid out of the booth after Bri got up.
Ava's heart started to thump as she walked over to Maya at the bar. She didn't want to startle her so she slowly sat on a bar stool next to her.
"Hey" Ava said loudly enough for Maya to hear her.
"Ava!.. Hi!" Maya said.
"How are you?" Ava asked dryly.
"I'm good. How are you?" Maya asked.
"I'm great!" Ava tried to say more enthusiastically.
"That's good!" Maya replied.
" So, is that the fiancé back there?" Ava asked.
"Oh.... Yeah. That's John" Maya said awkwardly.
"Hmm. Ok. That's nice" Ava replied.
"Yeah" Maya responded as if she didn't really know what else to say.
There was a long pause and Ava started to think that it was a mistake coming over here. It seemed like there was no way to get past the big elephant in the room. Ava thought about just saying goodbye and going back to her seat.
Eventually Maya spoke up. "Look, Ava..."
"Yes?" Ava responded.
"He's in the army, that's why you've never seen him. Today is his last day in town. He'll be going back early tomorrow morning" Maya stated.
