The Light Inside the Darkness

Chapter Fourteen

I could feel the sting of the frigid air as it brushed against my face causing me to pull my shawl a little closer to me. As I look around I could tell that fall was nearing its completion and it is only a matter of time before winter is completely upon us, which gives the party planning that much more urgency to finish as soon as possible before the actual date of the party. It is only a matter of time before the last leaf falls and the start of winter officially begins along with the snow that will follow right behind it. Once winter comes it is only another three weeks before the party is to take place here in the royal palace ballroom and I have to make sure everything is perfect. It would be a disgrace to my family as well as the royal family after they were so kind enough to lend us the castle's ballroom for our coming of age ceremony. Although I know the only reason the king has done this is just to show the world that despite the fact we are just a branch family to the royal family we are as close as a family should be, which couldn't be further from the truth. Don't get me wrong because both my sister and I both care for our uncle as the saying goes he's family and you will always care for your family. Even though it is hard to think of him as our family sometimes when he treats us as any random subject as if we mean absolutely nothing to him as if he excepts that we exist but doesn't see us as family. Although he does that luckily for us his sons don't do the so we are a lot closer to his sons, the princes of this vast kingdom than we are to our uncle. This only gives me even more reason to make sure everything perfect as I don't know what my uncle will do if something isn't up to his standers. 

I'm currently standing outside the doors of the palace directing the guys my father hired to help set me up all the decorations and I currently have them unloading the carriage that currently has a little less than half of the decorations for the party as the rest of is it is still in the process of being made. I am checking over my checklist that way I can mark everything that is already here and what I am still waiting for but it's okay because everything is still on schedule so I know I will be just fine. I feel a chill run down my body as the wind grazes across my exposed skin suddenly I felt someone's presence coming nearer and in the corner of my eye I could see it was one of the palaces maids coming towards me. As she came closer she stood three feet away from and as she kept her head down as she spoke almost as if she was bowing but it's more like she is too afraid to lift her head. "Excuse me miss but your family has requested that you come in now as it is quite cold out here today and do not wish you to put your health at risk. Besides in the meantime, I think these men would do just fine on their own don't you?" 

I clenched my jaw to stop myself from saying something I shouldn't because without a single thought I could automatically hear the true meaning behind those words. Which set my teeth on edge as she basically said that these men don't need to be getting orders from you as they can do the job without you and you are only getting in their way. Growing up in a world where everyone is equal honestly pisses me off now that I'm in this new world where women and men are treated differently than men as if women are inferior to men. When I know for fact that is not the case but there's not anything I can do as I don't have the ability to change the view of society in just a day with my ideas and facts I learned in science especially since they would ask where I got these facts since none are a part of this world. I took a deep breath to calm myself and as I did I could see all the men were looking at us with their cold glares waiting to see what is going to happen and without a word as to be spoken for me to understand what they are thinking as it is written as clear as day. They hoping I will take the bait and leave with the maid so they can their work without having to be bossed around by a girl who has no business getting in the way of their work because no men like it when a girl is considered above them especially if they would be considered their boss. 

I looked back at the maid and when I did I noticed her head was lifted just slightly as she must have been looking at me as I was looking at the men and I could see a slightly sinister smile on her face since she believes that she has somehow brought me, a noble, to my knees with a mere sentence. But unfortunately for her, I knew exactly what I was going to do long before now only now I'm going to have even more fun as I do it and by that I mean I'm going to become even more active than I was before. I lift my head ever so slightly as a way to show my status before speaking with a slight smirk on my face "No that is quite alright. I feel quite fine so there is no need for you or anyone else to worry about my well-being seeing as I am quite capable of taking care of myself. Although I do appreciate their concern it is quite unfounded. So now if you don't mind I have to get back to work." She looked quite shocked by my answer but had no choice but to bow her head and turn back but not before I noticed her clenched fist that was laying straight by the side of her legs as she walked away. Then I looked at the men who were standing there looking at us "There's nothing here for you to be gawking at so get back to work. I went this unloaded before the hour is up. There's not that much here so I don't understand why it is taking you so long. And if you don't start picking up the pace and it takes longer than an hour then we will deduct it out of your pay." After I said that the men finally got back to work and when I turned back and look at the area that the maid once occupied I saw her just entering the palace only for me to notice something red fluttering past one of the second-floor windows. I felt a chill run down my spine as I gripped tightened around the clipboard I was holding as I thought to myself "That bastard!"
