"So Malfoy, what spell don't you know"
Asked Hermione concentrated
"That isn't the problem. I know the spells the issue is that, that-"
He hesitated, as if he was about to say something deep about himself
"That I don't, that they, I mean the spells, they don't get out of my wand."
Draco confessed at last. Hermione was confused
"Um... what? Try the basic Wingardium Leviosa"
Draco tried the spell several times, but couldn't throw it. Then Hermione noticed his hand was shaking
"Why, why are you trembling Draco?"
She asked softly looking straight into Malfoy's eyes. The boy got furious
"I am not! It's just that this fucking wand d-doesn't work anymore"
He stood up and Hermione in that moment really noticed how nervous he was. Malfoy was letting words without any sense out of his mouth and beginning to sweat as if in panic. She tried to make him calm down by doing one of the most unexpected things she would have ever thought of doing.
She hugged him.
Draco was genuinely surprised.
He didn't understand her. She should hate him, like seriously deeply hate him fpr everything he had put her through. She should be enjoying seeing him like this, so helpless, so vulnerable. Yet, she still did everything in her power to make him feel better.
He hugged her back.
Hermione could feel his heartbeat. It was way far from the normal rhythm of beats, but she concentrated on it and gradually felt it slow down. She couldn't get enough of their proximity. His minty breath on her hair was absolutely driving her crazy. She couldn't control her senses as she inhaled his scent and took everything in.
Apples and a scent she recalled similar to the muggle Dior Sauvage.
~ he smells really good... concentrate Hermione! ~
He let her go first and they separated while staring at each other. His eyes seemed strangely less empty than usual and hers too were all focused on him.
They decided to sit down
"Wanna talk about it?"
Asked Hermione gently after a few seconds
"It's just..."
He sharply exhaled and closed his eyes for an instant
"From when I tried to kill Dumbledore I, I can't.."
Draco looked down ashamed. The girl understood.
"Come on, get up"
He did so and highbred his wand
"Listen, just try to put your wand a little bit further up"
Draco did so
"Like this?"
"No more"
"Like this?"
"No less"
Draco had to admit patience really was a great virtue.. unfortunately he didn't own any
"Oh come on Granger, I don't bite"
He took the girls hand and positioned it carefully on his, holding the wand. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She could do this
"Ok"
She took his hand and pointed it in a specific direction against a target
"Try"
Draco breathed in and out deeply, concentrated. He could do this. It had been too long since the last time he recalled successfully casting a spell. It had to end here and now.
"Wingardium Leviosa"
Hermione smiled seeing the pumpkin beginning to float in the air. Draco looked at her and smiled back, without snarling for the first time after months if not years. They returned inside, continuing to talk about this and that while people stared at them weirded out by the unexpected couple. Hermione evidently tensed and her action didn't go unnoticed
"Let them talk, until my parents don't see us, I don't see the problem"
The girl smiled and maybe turned a little bit too red on the cheeks
"See you tomorrow Granger"
He gave her one last glance before going away.
The brunette couldn't understand what was happening to her. What was happening to her?! She had started to hang out with the most hated person of the school, the person she had hated since year one, why? She didn't know the answer, she just knew she strangely had started to feel protected when Draco was around and longed to see him.
This definitely wasn't going to be good
