As a person who lives less than an hour away from Louisville, the thoughts of there actually being a purge was awful. So this article is for the people who did not hear about it or wanted to know more about it. All information and police statements were found online and are used for informational purposes only.
The threat of a real life 'purge' occurring in Louisville, Kentucky on August 15, 2014, were taken very serious by police departments in the area, who claim that a leaked FBI memo indicated that unfulfilled plans for attacking major events earlier in the year were coordinated by gangs. The idea of a 'real life purge' started when a photo using the description 'Louisville's the Purge', spread like wildfire on Facebook and Twitter. Rumors even claiming that a Detroit purge may be in the works in addition to a Louisville purge.
Louisville Metro Police Department Sergeant and spokesman Phil Russell claims the Louisville purge will have cops ready for anything, "A number of people have reached out to us. We're going to take any threats that we receive seriously, particularly one that encourges and incites violence against our community," Russell said. "We're going to take that seriously and investigate that as thoroughly as we can. As a department I believe that we are prepared for anything that could arise."
The Police believe these threats began due to the random mob violence that began earlier in 2014. For example, on March 22 a group of teens beat and kicked members of a family while their granddaughters were forced to watch.
Although nothing happened, there is reports that people were spotted in Georgetown, Indiana wearing masks and carrying around weapons.
Police are now investigating a teenager who has been accused of starting the threat. Police are still on the look out for anyone who might have started the rumors.
