The light seeped in through the crack in the curtains, stinging Jen's eyes. She winced. Moo was standing in the frame of the door, quietly watching her.
"Ok, stalker. You can stop watching me now." Jen covered her face with the blanket; the clock in the corner showing 6:30AM. After last nights phone call, she knocked out almost instantly. She was usually quite good with early mornings but today something was off.
"Sorry, I just didn't know when to wake you." For a manager and idol relationship, they were close. They had worked together for a very long time, so it was more of a brother/sister thing. Moo sat on the edge of the bed and pulled the duvet back. "I have good news and I have bad news." Jen pulled the duvet but Moo stopped it at her neck.
"Give me the good news and then leave." Jen sat groggy eyed.
"Oh, I was hoping you'd ask for the bad news first. Most people do."
"Well I'm sorry but I'm not really feeling in a bad news mood this morning, so politely take your leave and fix my curtains." The duvet was pulled over her head and quickly pulled back again.
"Your contract never ended. You flew off to Korea to start a new contract when you were already carrying one out."
"And your point is?" At the time, it seemed like a good idea and they allowed it but she knew it would come back to bite her in the ass.
"You're under a new contract now which means your obligations are with them..." Jen's face began to lift. "However," Here it comes, she thought, her face falling back down, "we've worked something out. They've agreed to give you a laid back schedule." What?
"What? What the hell is a laid back schedule? I'm not sure those exist, Moo." Her hopes quickly evaporating. "And that's hardly a compromise, I shouldn't even have a schedule!"
"I tried my hardest to get you out of it, Jen, I swear. I at least managed to get you the laid back part..." He sat trying to make light of a situation about to turn very dark. "Before you explode, let me give you the good news." She trusted him enough to wait. "They're creating this new tv show and they want you to be part of it; one of the leading roles. You don't have to attend any press conferences, award shows, events..." Moo coils back, awaiting the explosion.
No rest, no rest for 6 years. Not a single break in her entire career, no alone time, no time to breathe. Why not make it 7? She thought. Moo lifted his head to meet Jen's gaze. She wasn't taking it how he had thought, he was expecting the same explosion she always gave when she was forced to do something she didn't want to. But this time, she just sat there, numb.
"When do I have to start?" Her voice fragile in the crisp morning air. Moo sighed, apologetically.
"8:00AM..." She had no energy to rebel, the news itself almost knocked her out. She knew fine well the consequences rebelling had, she tried it once when it had all gotten too much during her idol career. People never understood what it was like to live that life, to constantly be in the limelight, to have every little action judged, her thoughts wandering. "I'll leave you alone now." Moo slowly got up off the bed and sauntered back towards the door.
"Moo?" Jen managed to spit his name out before it was lost in her throat. He turned around, with a sad look on his face. "Thanks for trying, I appreciate how much you do for me and I don't thank you enough. You're not getting a break either..." He shrugged.
"Ah, whatever. The pay's good." He scoffed and exited the room. That's one thing she admired about the people around her, no matter the pain they had within themselves, they were always able to front a brave face and carry on. Luckily, she was good at it too.
