NINA WAS dead.
I felt sick over it. She didn't deserve to die because of what had happened. She attacked me for no reason; but that didn't mean she deserved death.
After Nina was killed, Natalia was taken away and we continued with our lessons. I had to hide back my tears as I danced. As I shot at my practice. As I ate my supper. As I bathed.
And now, as I tried to sleep. It didn't come easily. We've been trained not to cry. It was hard to break that barrier sometimes. Sometimes it was easy.
When Natalia returned, she was quiet. I was surprised to see that she hadn't been put into confinement.
"Are you alright?" I asked her.
"I am fine."
"What did they do to you?" I asked her.
"Nothing. I dug a grave and buried her body."
I was quiet for a second. "Why did you do that?"
Natalia looked at me and I could see the exhaustion in her young face. Her bangs were messy, she was still sweating. "Why do you think?"
"She would have killed me." I murmured.
Natalia nodded once and changed into her pajamas. I turned away. I tried not to look at her like that.
"Thank you." I said. "I don't..."
"I saw red." Natalia said. She sat down across from me on my bed. "I saw you dying. I had to stop it."
I nodded slowly and looked up at her. "But at what cost to you."
She looked at me then, her green eyes locked into mine. My heart started beating faster. She had never been so close to me before. Not like this.
"What would have happened if she did kill you?"
I wasn't sure what to say. I didn't know. "I guess I'd finally be out of here." I finally said.
"Don't." She whispered. "Don't say that. I couldn't imagine not having you here. You're my best friend."
"I'm your only friend." I told her with a small smile.
