“Mommy, I don’t wanna go.” Sam said from the back seat.

“I promise it won’t hurt sweetie.” I reassured her.

“Really?”

“Yup, they are just going to put a thing, like a Q-tip, in your mouth and then it will be over.”

“Oh… okay.” It was quiet for the rest of the ride there.

When we got there we were sent to wait in a room. I sat down with her on my lap. She was playing with my fingers.

The doctor walked in and Sam stopped playing with my fingers.

“Mommy, I’m scared.” She whimpered and looked at me with her big brown eyes.

“It’s okay. The doctor will do it to me too, right?” I looked at the doctor and she nodded.

“Hi, I’m Dr. Mars.” She held out her hand and I shook it.

“Ally Hernandez.” I smiled and she smiled back.

“I know.” She bent down in front of Sam. “I’m Nikki, what’s your name?”

“Sam.” Sam said in a small voice.

“That’s a beautiful name.” she stood straight and sat on the chair. She put on some gloves, got some Q-tips and rolled over to us. “I hear you’re a little scared?” she asked and Sam nodded. “There’s nothing to be afraid of. Now if your mommy would just say ‘aaaaa’.” She said to me.

I opened my mouth. “Aaaaaa.” She put the Q-tip in my mouth and swabbed the inside of my cheek. She then put it in a container.

“And finished. Can you do that?” Nikki asked Sam.

Sam looked at me and I smiled softly at her. “It didn’t hurt one bit.” I said.

She turned to look at the doctor and slowly opened her mouth. “Aaaaa.”

Nikki quickly swabbed her mouth and put it in a container. “Good girl.” Nikki smiled. “Do you wanna see what good girls get?” Nikki rolled over to her desk and took a lollipop out of the drawer. She rolled over to us and looked at me to make sure it was okay. I nodded. “Here.” Nikki smiled and handed Sam the candy.

Sam took it. “Thank you Nikki.” She smiled a toothy grin.

“You’re very welcome Sam.” Nikki smiled brightly and turned to me. “We’ll just have to send it up and compare it to the DNA of the supposed father. You should have the result in about a week.”

“Thank you.” I smiled.

“I see she takes after you.” I laughed slightly and she opened a clip board. “So I see her annual checkup is around the corner. Do you want to have an appointment here or do you have another pediatrician?”

“Erm, here is fine. Her old doctor is in Texas.”

“Okay, does after a month sound good?” Nikki asked.

“That’s perfect.”

“We’ll send you a reminder the day before your appointment. I guess that’s it.”

“Okay, I’ll see you next month.” I put Sam down and took her hand. We walked to the door. “Bye Dr. Mars. Say bye Sam.”

“Bye bye, Nikki.” Sam waved with her free hand.

“Bye Sam.”

We walked out to the parking lot and to the car. I buckled her in the car seat and quickly made our way home. When we got there the girls were in the living room talking and watching TV.

“Hey girls.” I smiled and put Sam down.

“Hey.” They all said.

“What do you girls want for dinner?”

“Pizza!” Mila said.

“Homemade meal, Mila.” I rolled my eyes.

“Homemade pizza?” she shrugged.

“Mommy, can we have pasta?”

“Sure baby. Go sit with the girls while I make it.” I smiled and stroked her hair.

She walked over to the girls and sat between Lauren and Camila.

Lauren’s hand was on her knee and Sam pulled it to her, playing with her fingers.

I never really knew why she did that. It just became a habit but it was soothing.

I smiled at the sight of five of my favorite people talking and laughing, hoping it would be like that for a while.

As long as they are happy, I’m happy.
