Sam was on the floor in the living room while I was watching TV on the sofa, glancing at her every once in a while.
She was lying on her stomach and humming to herself while swinging her little legs back and forth. I smiled to myself.
I was quickly engrossed in the movie that was on and was snapped out of my thought when I felt hands pat my legs.
“Mommy, look what I made!” she handed me a picture and climbed on the sofa and onto my lap. “Look!” she pointed at the picture. “That’s you, me, Lauwren, Cammie, DeeDee and Mani.”
“It’s beautiful baby.” I looked at her and back at the picture. “Go draw more for the girls. You can give them it for Christmas.” I put her back down. “Then we’ll go and buy more for them and then we have to see Nikki again.”
She got a confused look on her face. “Why we gotta see Nikki?”
“To make sure you’re healthy, baby.”
“Will it hurt?” she asked.
“Maybe just a teeny tiny bit.” Her face had a worried look. I pulled her towards me. “Only for a second, baby, I promise. You have to get a shot and then it’ll be over.” I smiled softly to reassure her. She nodded at me and got back down on the floor.
When the movie was over she had drawn five pictures. One for each of the girls and one for me. I put them all in a drawer in my room and got Sam dressed and ready for the mall. I fastened her in her car seat and drove to the mall.
“Mommy?” she said.
I glanced at her through the rearview mirror. “Yeah, honey?”
“Can we get a puppy?” she asked absentmindedly looking out the window.
“I don’t think so Sam. It’s too much work and we have so little time.” I said sadly. Just between me taking care of Sam, us girls having to start working regularly and going on tour soon, it wouldn’t work. I saw her disappointed look. “Not now but maybe later.”
“Okay mommy.”
We were at the parking lot in no time. I got out the driver seat and went around the car to get Sam out. I put her on the ground, took her hand and we walked into the mall.
We went into a shop and looked around. I didn’t want to get the girls something majorly expensive, just something sentimental.
I found a jewelry holder in the shape of a dancer for Normani, color pencils and a sketch book for Lauren, a quote book and a ring for Camila and a prank book for Dinah.
I then went to the jewelry section and got six silver, heart-shaped, lockets I would get for us the girls and Sam.
We went through the children’s part of the store. I had to check to see what I could get Sam. I went through the stuffed animal section and saw a stuffed dog.
It was a very basic brown dog with silky fur and red collar.
I took it but Sam didn’t see. She was too busy admiring the other stuffed animals.
We made our way to the check out and we went back to the car.
“You ready to see Nikki?” I asked as I started driving.
“No…” she said quietly.
I sighed. “We have to though.”
“I know, mommy.”
“I have a surprise for you when we’re done.” I said trying to cheer her up.
It seemed to work. “Really?”
