I opened my eyes and stretched my arms out. I looked around and at the time. 11 o’clock. That was weird… Sam was usually up before me and would’ve already woken me up.

I quietly got out of bed and I went into Sam’s room.

She was curled up in a ball with her thumb in her mouth with her back towards me.

I smiled and sat down on the edge of her bed. “Sammy.” I rubbed her back through her covers to try and wake her up but she didn’t move. “It’s time to wake up baby.” She stirred and turned on her other side so she was facing me, her eyes opening slowly. She looked kind of pale. “Hey honey, you feeling alright?” I stroked her cheek and she felt a little hot. I kissed her forehead to double-check, she was burning up.

She shook her head and her bottom lip quivered. “Mommy.” She said before she burst into tears.

“Oh sweetie.” I threw the cover off her and picked her up. I was shocked, she was drenched in sweat. “It’s okay, baby. You want your binky?” she nodded and kept crying. I walked over to the dresser in her room and found a pacifier in one of the drawers. I put it in her mouth and her crying decreased a little. “How about we get you into something dry?”

I checked her closet for some thin pajamas but I only found a light pink, footed onesie.

I put her on the bed and dressed her in the onesie, throwing her old pajamas in the hamper.

“Come on baby, let’s get you down stairs.” I held her on my hip.

She put her arm over my shoulder pointing to her bed. “Kitdy.” She said with the pacifier still in her mouth.

I got the stuffed animal and handed it to her. “Here you go baby.” She snuggled into me and her hand that was around my neck was gently pulling on the hairs on the back of my neck.

I took her blankie also and walked downstairs with Sam in my arms. I walked into the living room and saw all the girls in there.

“Morning guys.” I yawned and stopped in the doorway.

“Good morning.” The girls said in unison, not looking up from the TV.

I shook my head and chuckled at them. I walked and sat down on the empty loveseat, put my legs up beside me and leaned back so my head was propped up at the armrest.

Sam lay on my chest using one of my breasts as a pillow and put her hand on my other one.

She used to do this when she was younger and I was nurturing her. It gave her a sense of security just to know they were still there.

I sighed.

I just felt like we were going backwards.

We were doing so well.

She was starting to be less shy around people, almost stopped using her pacifier. She started walking more and talking more, using more words.

Now she’s starting to cling more to me around people and hadn’t used her pacifier in over three months. Her speech was starting to become more like it was when she was younger. She was mispronouncing words more and not putting together many sentences like she used to.

It was just like she’s two again.

At two, she cried and clung to me, didn’t talk much, and the main thing I did was nurture her.

Sam snuggled closer into me. I looked down and her cheeks were still wet from the crying she had done earlier.

I placed my thumb on her cheek gently and wiped her tears away.
