-atsumu stranger! akaashi giving reader genuine smiles every time they see each other on the subway❞

oh how you wished the boy who smiled at you everyday would one day show up in the same uniform as you. maybe then you’ll have enough courage to talk to him.

he came onto the subway cart from the station right after yours and would make eye contact with you upon entering through the doors. a breathtaking and seemingly genuine smile would grace his lips each and every morning, never failing to make your heart beat rapidly against your chest. it was a small interaction and most days you were able to return the smile if you weren’t too caught up with being absolutely starstruck.

usually there were no vacant seats around you but the subway wasn’t too full due to the time still being quite early that there wasn't absolutely nowhere to sit. he’d be forced ㅡ well not really but kinda sorta ㅡ to walk farther into the subway cart and find a seat away from you which was pretty devastating. but you were more than happy with a smile as at least he recognized you.

thanks to him, you were on time everyday because you never wanted to miss seeing his smile. it really made your mornings and a part of you told yourself that he might get sad if you didn’t show up. that might be completely false but you wanted to live the fantasy anyway. plus, you didn’t want to disregard the blessing that was pure coincidence. his morning schedule matched yours perfectly, even when you had practices in the morning during tuesdays and thursdays. he’d show up at the same time and you wanted to believe that his smiles were a bit wider on those days.

it was after school that you never saw him.

not that you minded. the morning was enough.

though, unfortunately enough, today you were running much more later than you expected and you knew you weren’t going to see the boy at all. you already missed your regular subway, the one after that and the one after the one after that. you were extremely late and you knew there was no way the boy from your mornings was going to show up. that didn’t mean that you didn’t have to run onto the platform to try and catch arriving subway.

you wanted to scream ‘wait!’ and beg someone to stop the door from closing since you couldn’t afford to miss your 3rd period class as you had a test but you were well aware that all these businessmen and women were rather heartless and wouldn’t even spare a glance at a mere high schooler.

your running ceased and tears began pooling in your eyes as the doors began to close. your throat was burning and your heart was banging against your chest. you couldn’t believe that you had ran like you were running for your country at the olympics just to have the doors close on you on a subway platform that wasn't even the one you usually went to. you wanted to throw your backpack at the subway.

“don’t just stand there!” someone called out, your attention pulled to a door that was still open. your eyes met with a sea of a familiar blue-green hue and your body ran before your mind could tell it to. you pushed your aching legs to try and move faster than you already were and soon made it through the door.

“t-thank you,” you almost sobbed, resting your hands on your knees as you tried to catch your breath, “thank you so much!”

“heyㅡ catch your breath first,” he said softly, chuckling a bit as he helped you to stand straight. you faced the door window, looking as if your eyes were steady on the passing scenery but were actually taking in the faint reflection of your face. you looked like a mess, hair everywhere, face red, tear stained cheeks.

“thank you,” you repeated, turning to face your knight in shining armour whose eyes were already on you. the same smile you’d see in the mornings was present on his face, your heart melting and knees slightly giving in. he noticed and the smile disappeared, concern taking over his expression as he held his arm out to support you.

“it’s no problem,” he reassured softly, the smile returning, “i’d want someone to do the same for me if i was running as late as we both are.”

your lips lifted into a smile and you laughed, feeling a wave or relief rush through your body at the situation he admitted he was in as well. it was overwhelming but his calmness brought your emotions to simmer down, seeing the situation as much more trivial as you earlier felt. you were on the way to school now because of him and you knew you were going to make it on time to do the test you had to do for 3rd period. this was enough.

"i'm l/n f/n, by the way," you told him, "it's nice to finally talk to you."

his smile widened. "akaashi keiji. likewise."
