He was shrouded in the shadows underneath a large weeping willow whose branches stretched to the ground. He liked it here. The droopy branches hid him from sight. He didn't get wary looks. He didn't have anyone avoiding him. It was... peaceful. It also had the added bonus of Persephone's favor since he often thanked her and Demeter for weeping willow trees. They were beautiful, and allowed Nico a rare privacy. Dryads didn't often bother him here either as Weeping Willows as old as this one often did not have the tree spirits. This was due to the fact the spirits themselves were beautiful, and known to marry gods.
Nico, then, heard voices from outside his tree. He listened in on the conversation.
"Are we there yet?"
"No. We've got another three miles."
"We crashed the ship." A female voice sassed, "And it was partially your fault, so deal with it."
"I hear another heartbeat." A deep voice said. Nico flinched back. Were they monsters? Or just meta humans on the run? Or, worse, heroes? He did not feel like dealing with their enthusiasm!
"Did someone follow us?" A new voice asked. There was a silence, "Show yourself!"
Nico sighed, in annoyance before standing up, and walking out of the Willow's branches. He wasn't completely surprised when he saw the Justice League founders.
"Oh," Flash sighed in relief, "It's just a kid." Hawkgirl smacked his arm.
"What's your name?" Wonder Woman said softly.
Nico huffed, crossing his arms.
"Where's your folks?" Superman said looking around.
Nico just stood there.
"Creepy." Flash muttered. Hawkgirl and Wonder Woman smacked him.
Green Lantern paused, "Can you speak?"
Nico nodded.
"Will you speak to us?" Flash asked slowly.
Nico shook his head, and started to walk away,
"H-Hey!" Flash shouted, zooming beside him, "What's your deal?" Nico ignored him. Flash raised his hands to grab Nico's shoulder. Nico judo flipped him - a trick learned from Annabeth - and started off at a slightly faster pace. He didn't want to shadow travel and waste energy or reveal his powers.
"Alright. Lesson learned... don't touch or underestimate creepy tree kids." Flash groaned from the ground while a few of the others snorted, "Hey... where's he going?"
Martian Manhunter glanced at Batman, who nodded. The Martian's eyes glowed a brighter red....
STAY OUT!
He stumbled slightly a few seconds later, and the glow left his eyes. Batman recognized the effects of a strong mind barrier, and his eyes narrowed.
The group started to follow Nico. Nico, after deciding he was better off if he just went to his makeshift home, and stayed there, they might take a hint. He walked into his house, an abandoned two story cabin he had found ages ago. The group stopped outside. He then climbed the wall using a set of boxes into a large hole that led to the next floor - the staircase was too damaged for Nico to risk it.
——
After the boy went into the old cabin, the Justice League stood there a minute. Batman's eyes narrowed, and he started to walk in. Everyone but Flash followed.
"I'm not going in there..." Flash was cut off by Wonder Woman grabbing his arm and dragging him inside.
The heroes were surprised to see that the seemingly ancient two story log cabin had been turned into a home. Crates stacked up made for a stairwell that went into a hole in the ceiling, the floor had been swept, and there was a pile of hay - most likely stolen from a nearby farm - that made up a small cot. The walls had a few newspaper clippings, posters, and pictures hanging on them. There was a strange hint of melancholy to the room. It was as if someone had tried to make things feel and look better, but had only made things worse. The group slowly walked through the room. They glanced at the pictures stuck with makeshift glue (made from honey, mud, and whatnot) on the wall. The photos mostly were of a teen girl with caramel - colored skin, the boy, or an older girl who looked similar to the boy. The posters were old - probably from the original cabin owners. There were strange objects strewn across the room as well. Batman bent down, and picked up a coin covered in strange writings. He looked around, seeing several others. The writing appeared to be in Ancient Greek, but the drachma was new with the Empire State Building etched into it's side. Batman stuck it in his pocket, deciding to study it later. There was a loud CLANG! And all the heroes whipped around to see Flash had dropped a large sword.
