Adeline's POV
"This is one of your other brothers?" I ask, staring up at the portrait painting of a young boy above the fireplace
His appearance proving him to be only about thirteen years old at the time of the painting. A small glare on his face as he is dressed in the Umbrella Academy uniform. The fresh morning sunlight illuminating his cold, dead eyes.
"That's Five" Vanya said behind me, still sitting on the couch, a book balanced in one of her hands "He went missing when we were kids" She conversed, her words delicate and of kind measure
"What about Six?" I turn my head to glance at Vanya for a moment, her head bowing down to her knees
"Ben" A male voice confirmed behind me
Both Vanya and I turned our heads to look behind at the tall, strong looking man behind us. He introduced himself just hours before as Diego. His black combat outfit fitting tightly to his body, my eyes scanning over each knife and weapon stashed away at his sides, easily accessible.
"His name was Ben. He died... a long time ago" He says, looking at me intensely, eyeing me up and down as he moved over closer to the couches
"I'm sorry for your loss" I console bluntly at the both of them
Vanya offered a small smile, nodding her head. Diego simply nodded his head respectfully as a sign of understanding. I could tell he was considered strong by all of the siblings. But I could also tell he wasn't as tough as he let out.
"So what's your story anyways?" Diego asks, sitting himself down on the couch opposite Vanya "Why did it take you so long to find us?"
"It wasn't as easy as just finding you guys. I tried, for many years. But no matter how hard I tried, Reginald always pushed me away. Kept me out of his life" I recall to the two of them, both of them listening intently as I spoke
"When I was ten, he sent me to a psychiatric hospital, claiming I was insane and I believed I had these... powers. A couple of weeks later, they found out I really did. They told Reginald either he paid them a large sum of money to keep quiet about it all or... they would send me off to the highest bidder to be... tested and all that" I explain, my chest thumping rhythmically as I spoke, but keeping myself together, I continued.
"Reginald paid them off and sure enough, they kept quiet about me. But instead they conducted their own experiments... sick ones. It was more torture than anything. Simply because they could"
"Why didn't you use your powers and escape?" Vanya naively questions
"Because they kept me at bay with drugs... lots of them" I respond, lifting my sleeve up to reveal the scars in the crease of my inner elbow
Vanya observes with wide eyes, but she continues to stay respectively quiet, as does Diego.
"At first it was whatever heavy shit they got in to subdue the violent patients, when that didn't work anymore, it moved to animal tranquilizers... and when that didn't work anymore... well..." I paused, Vanya and Diego both looking at me with interest
I sighed "One of the staff shared that his cousin worked on the streets, selling all sorts of drugs... That was the start of them moving to keeping me under their control with Heroin" I looked down, nervously fidgeting with my hands
"What did you do?" Vanya asked, leaning forward from where she was originally sitting
"I got addicted. I left the hospital, and I turned to drugs... I couldn't live without them" I shrugged her off politely
