Suggested Song: I Never Wanted You Like I Do Now by Elk Bell
Adelines POV
******
I lay in bed awake, staring at the ceiling. My eyes burning, begging for sleep, but I knew if I tried, I wouldn't be able to. I wanted to scream. I wanted to throw my hands in the air in frustration. I wanted to be able to breath.
I sat up, hanging my legs over the side of the bed. My feet gently kissing the cold carpet. I stood up and walked over to my closed curtains. Slowly, I sat on the chair next to it and moved a single curtain pane out of the way to peer outside. The night seemed empty. I observed the moon as cloud slowly drifted in front of it, creating threatening shadows in the courtyard.
Suddenly, my eyes began to widen.
I stand up slowly and press my face closer to the window than before as a shadow in the distance began to appear. It mocked the form of a human being. It danced around the courtyard, moving swiftly between the park benches and bins. I watched with heightened senses. The hairs on the back of my neck becoming electric. Before long, the shadow disappeared into a frightening memory. I simply stare out into the courtyard, stunted. I wondered for a moment what I had just seen.
A few minutes passed before I quickly put it down to a piece of rubbish and a tired imagination. Deep down something about the explanation I was repeating to myself didn't properly calm my conspiracies, but I continued to conjure answers in my head.
Man I need some water...
As I adjust the curtains to cover the outside view, I prepare to enter the dark halls outside to make my way to the public kitchen area. I really was not ready to go out into a dark and quiet hallway after experiencing that. Whatever that was...
I carefully turned my door handle and pulled, exposing the darkness that lurked in the halls. I slowly crept out of my room and down the hall, my steps creaking faintly as I walked. My ankles clicked in rhythm with my beating heart.
Anyone else's ankles do this btw?? Mine do everytime I walk, it's weird... anyways, back to the story
I turned the corner into the community kitchen. It was padlocked, however, a small gap overtop of the pull across gate was just big enough for my to sneak in. I grabbed the small chair behind me and propped it against the gate. A loud creak protruded from the frail gate as I accidentally hit my knee on it whilst climbing onto the chair.
Slowly, I slip over top of the gate and step onto a table on the other side. I quietly climbed down onto the cold wooden floor. Quickly, I snuck through the dining room and turned the corner into the kitchen set up.
As I grabbed a glass off the clean dish rack I heard a small creak just outside in the dining room. I stopped and slowly balanced the glass on the counter top, poking my head out into the dining area. There was nothing. Just the same empty lines of table, and a small red light on the TV in the corner's power button. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion but quickly passed it off. It was an old building after all...
I returned to my glass in the kitchen and held it under the tap, slowly turning it on and filling the glass.
As I lifted the glass to my lips, the water silently slithered down my throat in a soothing manner. My lips slowly began to hydrate as I placed the now half full glass on the counter top. I placed my hands on the counter, leaning against it. Letting a small sigh slip out of my mouth as I relaxed.
"You know, you aren't really supposed to get midnight snacks around this place" I voice behind me suddenly speaks and I jump, quickly turning around
