Your life began to flash before your eyes. You watched all the important memories with your family and friends unfold one last time. You arrived at the final memory. Somehow you knew it was the last and most important one. It was a memory that had been buried for a long time - your reoccurring dream.

This time, everything was crystal clear.

You were 7 years old, back on the beach in New Zealand where your family had visited every summer since you were 5. You felt like you were there in person; you could feel the sand under your toes, the sunshine on your skin, smell the salt of the ocean, hear the sound of laughter and singing with waves crashing in the distance.

You saw your parents smiling as you chased after the other children playing on the beach. All your attention was pulled to one of the children in particular.

She was a cute black-haired girl with a sweet voice, singing as she skipped down the beach. You and her had been best friends ever since the first summer your family visited New Zealand, and all year you waited impatiently for the chance to see her again. She was 6, one year younger than you, but you got along so well and had so much fun together that you were inseparable. Your families always joked that you would get married one day.

She turned around and smiled at you, warming your heart. You ran over and gave her a flower that you had picked, and she giggled and put it behind her ear. She gave you a hug as she sang "You Are My Sunshine" to you with her sweet little voice.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy, when skies are grey
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away"

She finished the song and you smiled at her. She was an angel in your eyes. Her voice was so beautiful, and when she sang to you it was your favorite thing in the world.

"I love you."

"I love you too."

You hadn't even noticed that your families were chuckling behind you two and taking pictures.

"They're so young, they don't even know what love is yet" your father said with a smile.

"It's just puppy love," her mother replied, "But aren't they so cute together?"

You and the girl frowned at your parents. You were convinced your love was as real as it gets. From the first time you met each other, you had connected on a level only soulmates could.

"(Y/n), I'm sorry but it's time to go" your father said.

The girl pouted at you and took your hand, not wanting you to leave.

Her mother knelt down beside her. "Rosie sweetheart, you have to let
(y/n) go or the family will miss their flight. Say your goodbyes and then let them be on their way."

Rosie. So that was her name. You knew there was something important about that, but you were too deep in your mind's abyss to put your finger on it. Little you and little Rosie held onto each other until your parents forced you to let go.

"Promise you'll be back next summer?" she asked.

"Of course. Promise you'll always be here for me?"

"I promise."

Her parents looked at each other with worried expressions, but they didn't say anything. You said your goodbyes and left feeling happy, already thinking about next summer when you'd get to see her again. The scene faded, dissolving into darkness.

After a moment everything reappeared. You were back in the same place, one year later. Now you were 8. The happy feeling was gone. This time the air was chilly, and there were dark storm clouds blocking the sun. It was as if the weather knew how you were feeling - something was missing.

"Mom, where is Rosie? Why isn't she here?"

Your mother sighed, looking at you sympathetically. "(Y/n) - I'm sorry to tell you this, but the Parks have moved to Australia. She doesn't live here anymore."

You stared blankly at your mother as her words sunk in. Then your heart shattered into a million pieces. You fell to your knees, sobbing on the ground.

Your mother tried to comfort you. "I'm really sorry (y/n), I know you how much you liked her." She tried to put her hand on your shoulder but you pushed her away.

"No, no you don't. You have no idea. We loved each other, whether you believe it or not. But now she's gone, and I'll probably never see her again."

You looked out at the stormy ocean, longing for the girl who had been like sunshine to you.

"She promised she would always be here for me..."
