chapter seven: percy & thalia are fake friends :/
__________________________________________
IT WAS safe to say, ashanti felt a bit down at dinner that night. don't get her wrong, the food was excellent as usual. nothing can go wrong with barbecue, pizza, and never-empty soda goblets. the torches and braziers kept the outdoor pavilion warm, but they all had to sit with their cabin mates, which meant ashanti was sitting with her twin brothers, castor and pollux. not that she minded.
though, there were others who were less fortunate, like percy and thalia. neither had siblings, so they sat alone at their respective tables. campers weren't allowed to sit at another god's table. camp rules. she sympathized with them as when it wasn't fall, winter, spring or summer break, ashanti was equally as lonesome as the both of them were.
other cabins, such as ares, hephaestus and hermes, had a few people each, so their tables weren't as barren. since nico di angelo was a new camper, and unclaimed, he sat with the hermes children until his parentage was determined.
the stoll brothers, sons of hermes, were trying to convince nico they could teach him a new game that was much better than mythomagic. poker. she grimaced at the thought, and hoped the ten year old hadn't brought any money to lose to them. they were notorious for being nearly undefeatable. though, the dionysus girl never gave it a shot. she didn't want her luck to run out.
the only table that really seemed to be having a good time, well, not counting her older brothers and their belching contest, was the artemis table. they chatted, laughed, and drank like the were a big, happy family. which, ashanti was sure they were.
at the head of the table sat zoe. she didn't yell as loudly, or lead any conversation, but kind of overseen them all in a motherly way. it was kind of sweet the way she smiled from time to time. ashanti couldn't stop her eyes from taking in every detail of her appearance, just like she used to.
her dark, chocolate colored braids were neat and luscious, the silver of her lieutenant's band caught the light and shone beautifully. ashanti thought she looked pretty when she smiled. from time to time, the dionysus girl would duck her head, not wanting to get caught staring. once upon a time, ashanti's only wish was to be by her side.
bianca di angelo seemed to be having a great time. she was learning to arm wrestle from a huntress, the very same who had been fighting with an ares boy a couple hours before on the basketball court. despite not having a chance in hades at winning, the unclaimed girl didn't seem to mind.
when they'd finished eating, chiron made the customary toast to the gods and formally welcomed the hunters of artemis. the clapping was pretty half-assed, but the centaur pretended not to notice, keeping his cheery tone of voice, even if it were partially for show.
then, he announced the goodwill capture-the-flag game, which was to happen the following night. unsurprisingly, it got a much better reception from the campers. even causing a bit of a buzz as they all headed back to their cabins for an early, winter lights out.
ashanti was absolutely exhausted, after all, she hadn't had sleep in the past thirty-six hours. from the moment she changed into comfortable clothes, and slipped underneath her blankets, ashanti instantly plunged into her dreams. not even staying awake for usual, in the dark conversation with her brothers.
