“Kaylee!” Izzy exclaimed as she got off her bed to hug me.

I laughed slightly as I hugged her back.

“I see you’re feeling better.” I said taking a look at her.

She definitely looked a lot better and livelier, I hated when she looked so lifeless on the hospital bed earlier.

“Yeah, I’ve been doing really well. I don’t know who did it but one day, I just got transferred and started getting all my treatments we that couldn’t afford before.” she said pulling out of the hug.

“I’m really happy for you.” I beamed at her.

“Thank you, I really want to know who that person is so I can at least give my thanks to them.” she sighed.

“I’m sure the person already knows.” I shrugged.

She rolled her eyes. “I know it’s you.”

“It’s not me.” I laughed.

She rose her eyebrow at me and I sighed.

“It’s really not me though, I wanted to. I thought the money I saved up would be enough to get you out of that dump but turns out it’s a lot more expensive than I thought.” I laughed slightly. “I ended up telling my uncle about it and he insisted on covering everything up. So it’s him, not me you should be thankful to.”

“Kaylee.” she rolled her eyes again but this time there was a small smile on her face as she pulled me in for another hug. “It’s the thought that matters, I can’t believe you would even want to do that for me.”

“Why wouldn’t I?” I wrapped my arms tightly around her before pulling apart seconds later. “You’re like a little sister to me.”

“You’ve changed a lot.” she laughed as she looked at me. “When I first met you, you seemed like you hated everything and everyone.”

“Not so far from the truth.” I teased.

“I love seeing this side of you, your smile is really pretty. Your genuine one.” She pointed out.

“You’re a really great influence then.”

“Could you thank your uncle for me? My dad would like to thank him as well, I‘ll tell him when he gets back. You have no idea how happy he was, even my grumpy brother was too!”

I nodded. “I will, he said he’s going to visit you one of these days.”

“I’m going home in a few days, you guys can come for dinner once I’m all settled in.”

“Sounds great!”

“Sorry to interrupt your little reunion.” I heard someone say from behind us making us turn around.

I rolled my eyes as I saw Ryan walking in through the door.

“I was just going anyway.” I said picking up my phone from the table.

“We need to talk.” Ryan said stepping in front of my way.

“Not interested.” I said trying to push past him.

“I didn’t ask.” he stated.

“You guys know each other?” Izzy asked confused.

“Sadly.” I replied glaring at him.

Ryan and I were never really on good terms, or at least he usually just ignored my presence till recently. Regardless, I was still mad at him for what happened last year and even if it’s been a month since we resumed from winter break, I’ve been bent on avoiding him.

“Please.” He strained out.

“Make it quick.” I said as he moved out of the way so I could go into the hallway.

Following me behind, he shut the door and turned to me.

“What do we need to talk about?”

“Look.” he sighed. “We didn’t exactly get off on the right foot.”

“I wonder whose fault that is.” I muttered.

“I had nothing against you. I’m not exactly a ray of sunshine, that’s how I treat everyone.”

“Ok, is that what you wanted to talk about? It’s not like I really cared.”

“Can you let me talk.” he asked getting annoyed. “I’m sorry, what I did was wrong. While I still stand on him knowing the truth, it wasn’t my place to tell him.”

I stared at him shocked. “You apologized? I had no idea you were capable of that.”

He glared at me clearly not amused.

“You’re making me regret it.” he stated dryly.

I stayed quiet before I let out a small breath. “I get it, I shouldn’t have kept something like that from him. I really was going to tell him before the whole Melissa thing happened but now he knows so it’s not much of a big deal anymore.”

“That’s the thing, you do realize how much Christian cares about you right? He doesn’t even spare her much of a glance whenever you’re around, his eyes are always on you.” He said. “I mean, I don’t get this love thing people have going on but even I can’t deny it’s there.”

“It’s a lot more…complicated...” I looked away.

“I don’t know what you have going on, especially in your personal life and you can keep that private. You’ve been avoiding him ever since so I don’t expect you to notice.”

I turned my gaze back to him. “Notice what?”

“Since you two broke up, he hasn’t been his normal self but this week has been the worst.”

I did notice that he was skipping classes and missing a lot of school days, he barely smiled or talked to even his friends. I mean, nothing there, I’m just a really observant person. Definitely not watching him secretly.

Ok, hear me out, I’m not a stalker. I couldn’t help one or two occasional glances him every once in a while, I admit so bite me.

“Tomorrow is the death anniversary of his dad and little sister.” He said and my heart fell. “There’s a lot he hasn’t told you but it’s…a lot. It’s taking a huge toll on him.”

“I feel…really bad…but why are you telling me all this?” I couldn’t help but ask.

“I know you’re mad at him and you have a good reason to but I think you should give him a chance and hear him out. I don’t know what it is that you do, but he needs you.” He said.

I sighed folding my arms, my head swimming with thoughts.

I was having mixed feelings. I mean, I wanted to stay away from him but at the same time, I wanted to be there for him. Suddenly, everything wasn’t making sense and I don’t know what I want anymore.

“This is probably the nicest thing I’ve ever said to anyone but whatever it is that is bothering you, you’ll get through it.”

I nodded slowly, my mind coming to a decision.

“Ok, so now that’s done, don’t expect me to be nice again.” He said dryly.

My lips curved up in a small smile. “I’m not hoping on it.”
