The next morning, I go down a few floors to go to Claire's room, like I do every morning. The weird thing was, she wasn't there.
"She must've gone off with Jake." I thought. "She'll walk with me tomorrow morning."
I sighed and walked down the stairs to my first class.
"I'm not going to get mad."I promise myself. I sigh once more and settle down into my desk. Claire notices me and scribbled something down, then hands me a note:
"Sorry I didn't walk with you today, I came with Jake."
I write back:
"It's fine."
"Really?"
"Yes, but can you walk with me tomorrow?"
She hesitates as she writes this:
"Sorry, Jake and I are going to breakfast."
Instead of answering, I get up and throw the note in the trash. Whoops, I did get mad.For the rest of the class, Claire continues to pass me notes, but I don't read them. I just want to run away from her and Jake. Mostly Jake. After the bell rings, I rush out of the classroom and down the hallway. I turn around to see Claire catching up to me, but Jake pulls her back. I shake my head as tears form in my eyes.
It might sound ridiculous to get mad at a new couple, but Claire is literally my only friend here. I run the rest of the way to my room and slam the door behind me. I lay with my face in the pillow for a couple hours. I hear a knock on the door.
"Go away Claire!" I scream, but the knocking continues. I get up angrily and open the door to find Matt standing there.
"Are you okay?" He says, and those 3 words were enough to comfort me.
"Not really." I admit, and open the door a little farther to let him in. We sit at my little coffee table in the corner of my room. After a few moments of silence, he brings me in to a hug. Not a boyfriend hug, but a friend hug."I'm sorry." I say.
"No, it's okay." He says.
This is when I realize why I liked Matt. He's so sweet and caring. Knowing that he doesn't have a girlfriend currently, I lean in and peck him on the lips. He is startled, but smiles, and kisses me back.
