Chapter 12

It's eight in the evening and the coffee shop is still filled with customers coming in and out.

A woman got inside wearing black mask, a pair of round sunglasses and a cap. She ordered caramel latte and went to find a seat. But before she could do, she asked the cashier.

"Excuse me.. Do you know a Kim Baechun who worked here before?"
The cashier was surprised and then answered.
"Kim Baechun? The name rings a bell. Oh! It's Chaeyeon's daughter..Yeah it's her.. She's a daughter of one of the employees here. She worked here before but not anymore."
The woman was not satisfied with her answer but seems surprised with what she knew.
She then went to a seat.

In a little while.. her coffee was delivered.
" Excuse me Maam. Here's your caramel latte."
The woman just nodded but noticed the nametag on the dress of the waitress who delivered the coffee.
'Kim Chaeyeon.' She whispered.
"Yes Maam. I am Kim Chaeyeon so if you need something just call me. Oh! You were the one who came here last night, weren't you? You were looking for my daughter. Don't worry she'll be here soon."

The waitress left with her tray and the woman started sipping her coffee when a door opened.

I was thankful that our training didn't have to stay so late. I had time to see her. The one who wanted to meet me and ask me a question.

I hurriedly went inside and found my mom going to the crew's area.

"Eomma.."
"Baechunie.. you're early today. You want to help?"
"No mom.. Did that woman come here again looking for me?"
"Oh yes.. There she is."
And she pointed to a certain table with a woman wearing a cap sitting her back at us.

I walked straight to her and touched her shoulder.
"Hey.. you were lookin for me?"
She turned her face at me full of coverings. But I recognize her.
I sat down in front of her.

"Your mother is kind Baechunie. Just like you."
She talked.

"What do you want... Jina unnie?"

And she took off her glasses and mask leaving her cap on her head. She must be disguising from paparazzis.

Certainly, it was Jina unnie.

I was surprised how easily Baechun recognized me with my disguise. I may be too easy to be identified.

But whatever it is, I got this chance to talk to Baechun.

During the event, the sight of Changgu made me uneasy. It's been so long since we saw each other.. And we left not in good terms.

Because of that I thought of talking to Baechun but I had the tiniest opportunity since she was so busy with her friends. And I can't discuss it with her in front of our club members when we were gathered.

I thought of passing by their house in Imja with the hope of seeing Changgu but nothing. I got a call from my boss that afternoon that I have to hurry back so I couldn't get to talk to Baechun.

However, I investigated their whereabouts in Seoul and found out that Baechun worked in JGS before and in this coffee shop so I visited here last night but I wasn't able to meet her.

And now she's here, laid in front of me.

"I didn't know that your mom worked here too. She must be working so hard."
"Unnie..I know this is not what you came for. What is it? Please tell me."
I caught the excitement in her voice.
"I saw him.. I saw Changgu oppa in Imja yesterday."
Her eyes went bigger. Did she see him too?
"I thought I could talk to him but he was gone. Baechuniee.. Do you know where he is right now?"
Baechun looked at a blank space.
"Why? Unnie.. Why do you want to know about my Changgu oppa?"
That flustered me. She must not know about my relationship with Changgu oppa way back primary school. Changgu oppa introduced me to her once when she was young. But at that time, she was so sickly that I couldn't play with her. She must have forgotten about me and... I to her.

"If you can still remember, Changgu oppa and I were bestfriends since primary school."
I let go a deep breath.
"Until middle school and highschool with... Jongdae."
She didn't look surprise. Not at all.
"But things didn't go well when I and Jongdae became more than just friends and Changgu oppa got so angry.. He didn't tell me why but he changed after that. Things got worse when Jongdae oppa decided to leave for training when her sister died. We were together again during the last year in our club.. that you were in. But it didn't change the fact of what happened before." I paused and continued.
" We graduated with hate and pain in our hearts. After I graduated, my family and I moved here in Seoul for good. But something unusual happen. Days after we transferred home, I started receiving letters on my doorsteps week by week. No address, no name.. but the person surely knew about me."
Baechun was silently listening.
"The letters have lines like.. 'I am still your bestfriend'..'I will work hard for you.. To be the best man you deserve'..They all sound sweet but I felt my hair on my nape standing as it becomes creepy."
"Even at school in college, I receive such letters with petals and the like.. it felt so strange each passing week.."
I stopped for a while and looked at the outside through the glass pane. The busy street has become quiet.
"It only stopped when I started working on TV."

".. Unnie. Did you think it was.."
"Yes.. It's him. Changgu oppa. Here.. I brought the letters.. you can check the penmanship."
I caught some papers from my bag and gave it to Baechun. She opened it and I saw her expression. Expressiom of confirmation.

"But Unnie.. Why are you still looking for him? Were you not happy that he ended giving letters to you?"
"I was just worried about him. Maybe something bad happen to him."

"Did you like my brother? even for a bit?"
Baechun asked it straight to my face. I can sense aggresion from her.
"Of course.. he was my bestfriend. I do care about him. I still want to see him.. I just want to make sure he's alright."
I felt like tears going down from my eyes when Baechun touched my hands still holding the coffee.

"Don't worry unnie. Changgu oppa is fine. I can assure you that."

And she gave me her sweet smile. I gave her mine too.

At least I felt relieved.. my bestfriend is safe.

So it was Jina.. and her story. Oh Changgu is kinda creepy.
