Since time was now a factor in the precious life of my mom, I had to make sure certain things were done.
Although my mood was dampened for the best part of the first week, I quickly picked myself up and came up with a couple of things I had to do before she goes. The first of the two was meeting Rose and her mom. I needed her to know that I’ve got someone special looking out for me.
The second of the two came a little later. A surprise, last dinner party.
For someone that was quickly approaching her imminent demise, you’d swear she would show more urgency when it comes to life, not with her though.
She didn’t change a thing since she was diagnosed and while this kind of irritated me, she was comfortable, that’s all that mattered.
That weekend when Rose and I returned to Mountain view together, we decided to make the meet happen.
Her mom invited us to dinner so I just had to make sure comes with.
When we arrived we were warmly welcomed. The dinner was beautiful. Our moms clicked instantly without even having to bring up any topics regarding her health. My mom was also elated at the fact that I’m dating Rose. After a couple of minutes filled with Mom jokes, she calmed down and called it a night. I took her home that night knowing we did well, for phase one.
Now all we had to take care of was the surprise dinner.
We planned for it to happen 3 days before she was due to be admitted to hospital. The kitchen and dining rooms were beautifully decorated. The setting looked magical.
She seemed to be in disbelief when she walked in to find everything looking as fancy as it did.
“Oh my word! This is so beautiful. Carlos, Rose. I’m so happy.”
She broke down into tears which also made the moment even more emotional for us. We all sat down and began to enjoy these last few moments.
After about two hours or so of laughter and smiles all around the table, the perfect night was capped off with some music and all four of us danced the rest of the night away.
A week later we found ourselves in the hospital. I was sitting alone in the waiting room, waiting for Rose to bring coffee. I hadn’t got any sleep in a while. A few days to be honest. Rose’s mom was in the room with mine. She hadn’t left her side since she’d been admitted.
Rose finally got back with the Coffee.
“Heyy, here’s yours. How’re you holding up?”, she asked.
“I’m a little exhausted, other than that I’m fine considering the circumstances."
She sat down and snuggled into me.
“We’ll be okay Carlos. I’m right here."
At that moment Rose’s mom came out the room with tears in her eyes.
“She’s gone now. Don’t worry. She was at peace.”
She walked out the waiting room area in tears. I could only assume she needed time alone. I know I didn’t. I was devastated. The feeling of something like this finally happening wasn’t good at all. I felt empty.
It may have been hard to say goodbye and let go but I knew that she was okay wherever she went.
