Me.
I grew up in the lower west side of a little quiet town called ”Mountain view”. Being the lower west side kinda meant you were either poor, a drug dealer or a minority raised by immigrants. I happened to be two of those things, just don’t expect to see me handling snow on the corners anytime soon.
Most of my childhood was spent playing with my younger siblings and watching my parents try to do the most with what we had, which wasn’t really much to begin with. We didn’t have money but we were happy to be together.
One day things changed though. For the worse.
Now at this point I want you to use your imagination again and picture a really big airport. The biggest of them all infact. JFK International. Now picture a lanky Puerto Rican man carrying a black leather bag through the security gates. He looks like he’s got everything under control until things spiral into a very dark sequence of unfortunate events.
This man you’re currently trying to picture is my father.
Long story out the way, he was arrested just 2 minutes later for possession of Cocaine. About $4 million worth. The kind of Cocaine that smaller drug dealers could only ever dream of here in Mountain view.
His trial didn’t take long and the sentencing process went by even faster. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison. A little harsh, given his role in the whole exchange, but considering the fact that he’s a minority, poor and not exactly friendly with law enforcement, I couldn’t see a reason to complain. I was only 6 years old then.
You see my life didn’t just change that day. It completely turned and flipped over. I’m 20 now and I’ve just finished my first year in University.
Let’s just say last year was a little more than just a year.
