If silence could ever describe a conversation better than my attempt to acquaint myself with Rosanna, I would pay to see it happen myself. I swear things were all going according to plan, in my mind. I approached her and introduced myself.

“Uhm, Hey. I’m Rosanna but you can call me Rose if you want", she reluctantly replied.

She then proceeded to turn away from me and bury herself in whatever book she’d been hugging against her chest.
I wanted to say something but every time the words almost came out, they just didn’t seem right anymore. Like the universe was telling me what not to say. My patience lasted surprisingly long and we only went the next 3 hours of the lecture without saying a word to eachother.

Once the class had concluded, she rushed out into the hallway. At this point I wasn’t going to let another opportunity slip. So I ran out after her and went for it. There she was, in her seemingly perfect sun kissed stage light again. Nerves nearly got the best of me. I approached.

“Uhm, hey Rose. I was wondering if maybe we could meet up and, you know, talk about the project?”

She nodded yes but still looked unsettled.

“How does Campus Café sound?”

She nodded again, this time slightly more comfortable.

“Tomorrow morning, say around nine-ish?”

“Yeah sure, I could make that work”, she replied.

Although she still seemed extremely uncomfortable around me, I still saw the situation as an absolute win.

“Okay then Rose, uhm, I’ll see you tomorrow I guess”

I walked away with the feeling of a 14 year old who had just spoken to his crush for the first time. This may sound nerdy but for me, just talking to a girl that pretty was an accomplishment worth noting. High school hadn’t been the most helpful time.

I left her in the hallway and walked home. Well home wasn’t exactly “home”, considering I was studying 500 miles away from Mountain View. I lived in a student residence. The scholarship had been paying for my accommodation as well, so that made things a lot more convenient.

Having my own living space was more than any of my family members had managed to do. It wasn’t the fanciest place but I wasn’t about to complain. I had a kitchen and a small bathroom. A small bedroom was made even smaller by the small storage cupboards against the wall.

The apartment was small.

I was the only occupant though.

So that was fine by me.
