We found ourselves once again bathed in tragedy. Our attempts to console Rose had been futile so far and any form of communication was virtually pointless. For the first time we really couldn’t do anything to help. She needed to be alone. She needed time to think. I had never met either of her parents but according to what I had heard from Melinda, her mom was a passionate happy go lucky fashion designer. She loved everything she did and did everything she loved. She had a serious side that only ever really showed when she was working late. Overall she sounded like a great person. Her father didn’t come up much in conversation. I can only ever remember her mentioning that he’s an attorney or something.

We gave her a couple of days to recover and regain herself before making any real attempts to have a conversation with her.

“Hey Rose, how’re you feeling?”, Melinda asked.

“I’m better, I just needed some time out.”

“We’re here for you Rose, I hope you know that", I said.

“Thanks Carlos, I could never replace you guys.”

She seemed to be getting a little emotional but kept herself together.

“Actually, I have to tell you guys something.”

“What’s up?”

“Uhmm, this isn’t easy to say, I’m moving back with my mom.”

“What! You cant just leave us Rose", Melinda pleaded.

“It’s not permanent, don’t worry. I’m just supporting her for now until things settle down and my dad leaves.”

“You’re probably right, this can’t be easy at all on her. She needs someone close by.”

“And don’t worry guys, I’ll be back sooner than you think, I swear, when I get back we’ll go out for milkshakes like we used to.”

“That sounds like a plan", I said.

We both accepted that she would be gone for a while now. Although it wouldn’t be easy to adapt to life without her, she’d be back soon enough and maybe then, life could go back to what we call “ normal”.

Something was bothering me though. I needed to tell her how I feel before she left. It may seem a little selfish but the longer I wait, the more uncertain things become. That night just before she left for the airport I asked her if we could talk out on the balcony.

“So this is it huh?”, I chuckled.

“You say it as if I’m going forever Carlos, it’s just a little while.”

“Yeah well, that’s a little too long if you ask me.”

“Is it just me or is someone going soft on me?”, She joked.

“I wouldn’t call it soft. Emotionally expressive sounds better", I replied.

She laughed a little, then seemed to take on a much more serious tone.

“Carlos, can I tell you something?”

“Yeah sure go ahead.”

“I’m really going to miss you while I’m gone.”

I assumed she was referring to both Melinda and I, so I just brushed it off.

“We’ll miss you too Rose.”

“No, Carlos, you don’t understand, forget about Melinda, I’m really going to miss you.”

She stepped a little forward and took my hand.

“Uhm Rose, I’ve actually been meaning to tell you something too.”

“Wait, uhm, I wasn’t yet done", she said.

My heart was practically pounding out of my chest.

“I know what happened that night, at the festival", she explained.

“Oh uhm, yeah, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for things to…”

She cut my sentence short again.

“No, Carlos, listen.”

She paused and scoped the area around us before turning back to me.

“What I’m trying to say is, I wouldn’t mind if it happened again", She said nervously.

She didn’t even give me a chance to respond.

She leaned in and kissed me.

We held eachother like that for a good couple of seconds before stopping.

“I have to go now. See you when I see you?”, she asked.

“Definitely.”
