"Watch your footing. There's something on the floor at the bottom of the stairs," warned Stephen.
"Take your own advice," directed Aidan.
As Stephen stepped closer toward the object in their path, it became clear what it was. The wet glittery, almost black substance was blood.
"It looks like human blood," reported Stephen. When Stephen was on top of the blood, he took a long stride.
"Is it old or fresh?" asked Joseph.
"It's old. The blood is almost black from age," answered Stephen.
"A few days to a week," conveyed Aidan.
After Stephen cleared the blood, he noticed a white object out the corner of his eye. Stephen leaned over, attempting to see the item as he came closer. The object was oval, then his eyes widen, and he stood up fast.
"There's a head," uttered Stephen.
"We should watch for additional body parts. We need to find the basement light," disclosed Joseph.
"Aidan. Shine your flashlight around the ceiling so we can find the string," commanded Stephen.
Slowly Aidan waved the light around searching for a string connected to a light. The beam illuminated blood that stained the walls. As they found the cord that hung from a light fixture, Stephen walked carefully toward it. He pulled the chain. The light came on, revealing blood and the carnage that took place in the basement.
"This is a mess," stated Aidan.
"It's as bad as New York," said Stephen.
Immediately they gawked at the displayed scene of the crime. No matter where they looked, it held evidence. There was blood along with body parts, flesh chunks, bones, and scalps. The smell of decomposing flesh and blood was overwhelming their senses.
"Watch your step. We don't want to fall down in this," related Aidan as he held a hand over his mouth.
Stephen took a few steps then seen an eyeball, tongue, and small chunks of flesh. When Stephen walked further, he found a penis, scrotum, and a man's head.
"I found the father or what's left of him," reported Stephen.
"I found the remains of the grandmother. The head was the grandfather," informed Aidan.
"That means the only missing people are the wife and the three children," revealed Joseph.
Aidan found a small room separated by a wall at the back of the basement on his side. Immediately Aidan walked through the broken door and halted in his tracks. There was utter chaos in that tiny room. As Aidan backed away, he fought the barf that rose in his throat. When his shoulder hit the door frame, his eyes closed, and he cleared his throat.
"We no longer have to find the children," whispered Aidan.
"What did you say?" asked Stephen as his head snapped toward Aidan.
"I found the children," answered Aidan.
"We'll have to ask Adam why the carnage. They ate brains. Tore the adult males in half," verbalized Stephen.
"When we found Adam, there was a similar carnage there. He told us it was because the men fought," announced Joseph.
"This had to be a big horde," stated Stephen.
"Why would they do that to children?" questioned Aidan.
"A few of the reasons are the inconvenience, dominance, and other reasons," declared Joseph.
