Maddy paced apprehensively outside the bunkhouse. The doctor and Jed were busy inside the bunkhouse, tending to heyes. She was worried. What was wrong with him? He seemed perfectly fine last night. She bit her lip. What happened to him? She hoped he wasn't to ill. She bit her lip more forcely this time, drawing blood. She glanced at the house. Katelin was approaching. She stopped pacing and waved towards katelin. She swallowed, tasting a metallic taste.

"Has the doctor come out yet?" Katelin asked, pointing to the bunkhouse.

Maddy shook her head.

"What's your name? I never quite found out" katelin asked.

"Its Madeline. Madeline frost"

"That's a nice name"

"Where you from?" Maddy asked.

"Canada"

"Oh"

A silence fell over them as they heard the door to the bunkhouse open. They could hear hushed voices.

"Not at all. Not at all" the doctor saw the girls a few feet from him. He smiled.

"Is he alright?" Maddy asked.

"He's got the flu" the doctor replied. "That reminds me" he turned to face kid. He handed him a bottle. "Make sure he takes this in the morning, afternoon and before he goes to bed.make sure he has something to eat and plenty of liquid" he picked up his briefcase.

"How long will he be like this?" The kid asked.

"Flu can range from 5 days to 7 days" the doctor replied.

"OK thank you" kid replied.

"Its nothing."he turned to leave. "Oh and one more thing. He should be watched constantly"

"Ill be with him" kid replied.

"and if anything changes let me know. If he vomits. Its nothing to worry about. Some flu cases can lead to vomiting. Good day" he tipped his hat at the ladies and followed Mr mcCreedy to the door.

Maddy instantly ran towards the kid.

"Is he alright?" She asked, practically jumping up and down with worry.

"Go and see for yourself" he indicated towards the door.

Maddy stepped into the bunkhouse. It was slightly darker in here. Once her eyes adjusted to the light she could see heyes clearly. She walked over to his bed and sat on the edge of his bed. His eyes fluttered open.

"Hey cowboy" she whispered.

He went to speak but she placed her finger on his lips. "Shhh. Don't say anything" she kissed him gently on his forehead, which was burning. She took a piece of cloth and rung in out in a bowl full of cold water which was sitting by his bed. She gently laid it on his forehead.

"How you feeling?" She asked.

"Terrible" he rasped.

She stroked his hair as he laid there. Kid approached them slowly.

Heyes slowly sat up but found it to much of an effort. She pulled him into a hug, his head resting on her chest. He shivered.

"Wow. Your skin is like fire" she exclaimed.

"To me, I'm freezing" he said, his teeth chattering slightly.

She pulled his sheets up more over him and tucked them round him securely. She kissed the top of his head and gently rocked side to side.
